  • A much more "serious" newbie

    Hello everyone!
Like many others I've tried the diet & many others but failed on my own account. I do know one thing. It does work. My love of Chardonnay has kept me at bay. (notice the rhyme).I have come also looking for support & maybe a little "atta girl" now & then. Been around since almost Atkins' 1st book. Liked the way it worked immediately. But people change & we are always looking for the magic bullet. No more. It is a pleasure to see so many other people with like problems that are helping each other.
    Thanks for having me aboard!

    Welcome aboard.
Sad as it is there (probably) is no magic bullet. Just discipline and hard work but the rewards are great.

        Thanks Guys'
I know you all will be a great source of support. Today is about day 2 of being serious. I've tested a little purple on the K-Sticks altho I know it isn't always that accurate, it can lend a little encouragement sometimes. The scale IS NOT MY FRIEND. Even refuse at the Dr.'s.. I am 5' 2" tall. Last I checked I was around 135lbs. My educated guess by how my clothing fits is I am probably about 20 more now. I have really let that depress me. Don't know why we continually beat ourselves up not like it makes ya feel better. This AM went to a Zumba class at the local Y. Barely made 20mins.. I do much better on the new treadmills they've installed. (answered my own ques.).
Big, Big, trouble is going out to eat. I hate to cook & we both love to go out. Rest. menus are not even calorie friendly much Less tolerant of someone doing ATKINS. Took a 1 hour drive today to the only health food store that carries oodles of ATKINS stuff only to get there & have the salegirl tell me thay no longer carry ANYTHINK low-carb. Was pretty bummed. Will need to shop on line I spose. Thanks for listening. Feels good to have others who actually know what you're saying.

You don't have to have Atkins product. In fact we discourage any such products on induction. They are not induction friendly. They have ingredients in them that are not allowed - so that was just a good things. We try for whole food in induction.
Eating out is going to be a learning process for sure. But with investigating menues and asking the staff you may be able to work it out.

HI! What is your battle plan for this low-carb way of life? All I really know is basically ATKINS. Some of the others I've read only seemed to confuse me. I figured it was "the" better one for me as I do not like many fruits & vegetables. Dad was a meat-cutter when we were growing up & in our part of New England fresh fruit & veggies were only good in season. Besides Mom was not a fan. So meat & fish were our staples making ATKINS a little easier to understand & incorporate into my life. To this day I can eat fish for breakfast & think nothing about it. Husband kinda grosses out. Even Brother would rather do a steak for breakfast than cereal.
For years, I knew that if I ate cereal of any kind, I would be starving in 2hrs. If I have nothing, I can make it til lunch, no prob.

Anyone have the same situation? Thanx

Re: A much more "serious" newbie

I'm not sure how much help I will be as another newbie, but wanted to share my experience. I grew up in a Canadian household of hunters, with lots of meat and fish, but it was always accompanied by HUGE portions of carbs, like potatoes. When I started reading Atkins 3 months ago and started doing Atkins 2 months ago, I realized that somehow and someway, I had become very dependent on refined carbs over the years....pasta and bread, in particular. They were the comfort foods that my mother cooked. I never have eaten sweets, which I know is unusual.

In a way, I am getting back to my childhood roots, sans the potatoes. We were poor, working class and ate a simple menu. There was never much fresh fruit available, except for apples, strawberries and blueberries in the summer and fall, when I was growing up. Local veggies were the legumes, which I avoid on Induction. Bacon and eggs were a staple for breakfast. The cheese in most Canadian markets is outstanding...I am looking for an equivalent here. They are mostly expensive imports from England...ugh!

I never consciousiously realized, like you, that when I ate proteins, I rarely felt hunger, or even a desire for food. But my childhood diet of fresh fish and meat made it very easy to embrace Atkins.

Re: A much more "serious" newbie

Hi - I grew up in a meat & potatoes family. The only fruit I ever remember in our home were apples and green grapes - of course, when I was growing up that's about what people had...I was allergic to oranges so I didn't eat them, but they were in the house).

I was happy to find out that Atkins was a "meat" friendly way to eat because I'm still not thrilled over fruit. The salads don't bother me because for the last couple years we've had a lot of salad (hubby had triple bypass 3 years ago this mo) and I like the taste of the veggies.

I went to a couple of the recipe websites (Linda's & Shiela's are my favs) and have quite a few recipes to use so I don't get bored. I love the flavors of all the food I've had all week, there isn't anything I wouldn't eat again and that makes it easy to stay on track.

I joined some challenges, have posted and made a few friends so I feel if I get in trouble there are ways to get out quickly! Don't be afraid to ask questions, and don't forget to read the book, that will keep you centered from the first day.

I've only been doing this 5 days and feel better than I've felt in years. 10 years ago I got divorced and stopped drinking alcohol....a year & a half ago (July 4, 2007) I stopped smoking cold turkey.....this is where I finish working on "me"....I'm ready to make my weight problem and medical problems a thing of the past. When I put my mind to something I CAN do it...and I WILL do this!

Hope to see you around a lot!
