Hi all. My name is Lina, I'm 27, and hopefully a soon to be grad nurse.

I have about 85 lbs to lose. This is my first time giving Atkins a go. I've tried just about every diet imaginable but never really gave Atkins much thought. I've always heard rave reviews about Atkins but was unsure if I could really live a low carb lifestyle. My biggest problem is that I LOVE my starches. After reading more about Atkins I've realized this may be a way of eating I can live with.

I haven't purchased a book yet. Any suggestions on what book is best?

Until I read more about Induction over the next couple weeks, I will start my own transition of cutting my intake of complex carbs and start using some of the Atkins products.

I have a long road to travel and I hope Atkins will help me get there. Hope everyone has a successful journey!

    Hi Lina,

    Welcome to the board!

    To answer your question first...
Any suggestions on what book is best?
On this board, we go by Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, the 2002 edition (you'll see it abbreviated as DANDR 2002). This is the last book Dr. Atkins wrote before his death.

I am a little against the slow transition to Atkins, but if you decide to do it this way, then make sure you only start counting induction from the day you completely gave up everything that is not "legal". The Atkins products are not allowed during induction, despite what the Atkins company says, because they have "illegal" ingredients like soy and milk. Here is something about them:

Instead of eating low-carb junk food, you should choose natural, unprocessed foods whenever possible.

These are a few important sticky threads you should read before starting induction:

While I love Atkins, I hate his products as they do nothing for weight loss, taste like cardboard and are only fauxfoods.
Read Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution, stick to the acceptable list which doesn't contain any of his junk food and you'll be at goal soon

cruisinworld2, I started on a low calorie, whole foods, no refined carbs diet January 2, then switched over to Atkins when hunger threatened to derail me.

I noticed there was an adjustment period and a plateau for a couple of weeks after switching to Atkins, and the weight loss is just now picking up.

My personal opinion is that you would do better to switch to Atkins sooner than later. You can browse through the Atkins phases and FAQ's here to give you a head start while you are waiting for your book to arrive.

That's definitely my plan. I first have to learn more about Induction and prepare myself as stated (got thirty pounds of books in front of me to concentrate on reading lol) but I figure it wouldn't hurt to start weaning some of the complex carbs out of my diet. The day I start Induction I'm definitely going 100%. Thanks for the links and warning me about those hidden "illegal" ingredients! Who would've thought. I might not have paid attention. It pays to read those labels.

Thanks for the welcome Desertthorn and Sunny One.

SunnyOne - I agree with you. The only thing I like so far is the chocolate shakes. Something that finally curbs my appetite

Desserthorn - That's one of my fears that when I do transition to doing the Induction phase my weight loss may be slower. Glad to hear yours is picking up. Thanks for the link.
