  • Greetings from American in South France

Hi, my name is John, some people call me J.R.. The last time I tried Atkins, I was a teenager in the late-80s trying to get the 6-pack to show. I was reasonably light 7 years ago (~195lb, muscular), but a sedimentary lifestyle over the last 4 years has destroyed that body. I think I put on 20 lbs last year while my wife was pregnant with our daughter.

And two weeks ago, my wife dislocated her knee just walking around and she still can't walk or easily care for herself, much less a 9-week old baby, so both of them are recuperating in Southern Spain at her parents' house while I'm "stuck" in Southern France where my job is. Since the new bachelorhood seems destined to last at least 6 weeks, I decided to turn lemons into lemonade and I joined the local gym and doing cardio every day and hitting the weight room every other day. I lost a couple of pounds over about 8 days just from the exercise and just eating less.

Yesterday I just finished the first day of induction. I also used the elliptical trainer for 45 minutes and I stunned. I could barely get through the anaerobic stage (first 10 minutes) and I just didn't have any strength during the next 35 minutes. I thought I could handle a normal workout since I'd been doing them for the previous 2 weeks, but I almost had to quit. Then by 10PM I couldn't keep my eyes open and had to give into sleep 2 hours earlier than normal. I was reading here that the first few days of induction are tough, just wow. That must have been the "flu" I read about.

However, this morning, I tried out my newly purchased ketostix (a feat at the pharmacy considering I don't yet speak French) and was rewarded with a deep purple, almost the highest on the scale indicating ketosis. The scale says I lost a pound.

So I started at 254, I started Atkins at 252, I'm now 251 and I'm shooting for sub-200. 185 would be excellent (I'm naturally muscular at 6'0"). I'd like to drop at least 20 lbs from the starting weight before I see my wife again for a week-long Easter holiday (Semana Santa).

So hi everyone. I'll probably read the forum more than post, but if the topic strikes me, I'll post.

Welcome JR-- Wish my hubby would take advantage of the weight loss opportunities when I head to the US each summer. LOL It's usually an excuse for him to STOP exercising. Sounds like you are on the right track. I am so jealous-- you have so many nice cheese and other goodies available there, but I guess there is a lot of temptation as well (can you say "baguette"?) I bet your wife will be very surprised. Wishing you success.

Welcome to the board, JR! You definitely have the right attitude and all the exercise you're doing will really help the weight come off fast.

For your fatigue, I would recommend you start taking vitamins, especially a B Complex and some potassium to prevent leg cramps at night. And a multi because on induction you will be limiting a lot of the fruits and veggies that provide needed nutritments.

You are well on your way, so congrats on a great start and I'm sure your wife will be impressed with your results on her return!

Thanks for the advice Nyna. I've been taking these Centrum A-Z pills that I had at breakfast. Hopefully those are sufficient?

Thanks Jill - yes, there are quite a bit of temptation here. My biggest one is the "Citron" lemon pie. The food specialty in the midi-Pyrenees is sausage, anything with duck in it, and a heavy stew called cassoulet. I am crazy about warm baguettes with real butter though.

        Added: I love Roquefort cheese!

Welcome JR, glad you joined. Must be tough to be living in the south of France.

Oh yeah, cassoulet. Mmmmm. Well at least you can have fois gras.
