  • New guy, 385 and loosing

OK I am new here. I have lost 40 lbs in the past 2 months. I have never read the book. I know a little. Been eating only protein. I have not cheated on foods. I have been on the AD for 2 weeks? maybe 3 weeks. My only hang up has been soda. Diet soda. And i have not drank water by its self at all. I have been drinking sugar free punch but it has the stuff in it. I am not sure how this hurts me in the big picture.

Welcome to the board. Glad you came to learn - there is MUCH knowledge to be found here, both by exploring the sticky thrads in the forums as well as posting questions we are ever ready to help with.

First, not to offend, but your "AD" is not Atkins, from your post, it is a protein-sparing fast. In the beginning you lose weight; in the long run, your body adapts as if on a starvation diet so when you stop, you gain all you lost back, plus interest, then have a harder time losing it again.

Start reading ... in the induction forum, and in DR. ATKINS NEW DIET REVOLUTION (2002 revised edition).

ya do what boonie stomper said

      and also dont eat aspartame

and you must drink extra extra water during large amounts of fat loss there is toxins in that bad fat that you are loseing i think and it needs to be flushed out so drinking extra water during weight loss is a must

and your diet should be something like 65% fat 30% protein 5% carbs and not all protein

Well I eat, eggs and sausage , lunch is thin cut steak or chicken, dinner is fish or chicken. That is the make up of what I eat. I will start with 3 qts of water and drop the soda. I don't know how much fat is in the meat.

If you are doing Atkins, you have to eat veggies - otherwise you are doing your own version of a low-carb diet - not Atkins.

This board goes by Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002 pretty strictly . The stickies at the top of the forums condense the rules from the book pretty well.

            Welcome to the board, seabee!

You need to be eating veggies as well! They are an integral part of the diet. They give you needed vitamins and minerals and help keep you from getting constipated. You need to read the book! If done right, this diet is a life saver!

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

you might want to guy a copy of the book so you can follow Atkins correctly. Half.com has several copies very inexpensively - also Amazon.com has them.

you have done well loosing so far but once your body stalls you will wonder why - here are links that will help you. what you are doing now, only eating protein and no healthy vegetables isn't good for your overall health.

                Rules of Induction:

Exercise is not an option – it is mandatory ….. don’t say you can’t find a way and start today!

Atkins bars and shakes are NOT acceptable during induction – they are made with non-induction ingredients and cause stalling in many people. Just remember - if it’s not on the acceptable food list – it doesn’t go in your mouth!

This is from the "Read before you start" thread in the 14 day Induction area:
Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
                Filtered water
                Mineral water
                Spring water
                Tap water

Additionally (after your 64 ounces daily), you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
                Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three Tablespoons a day; note carb content)
                Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three Tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.
Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases.

eggs have 61% fat so thats good

fish is good for omega-3 make sure the fish is oily like canned salmon so you know its got lots of omega-3

remmber to use butter and or salt free butter

and dont use margin it has polyunsaturated omega 6 vegetable oils which cause heart disease

also if you only eat 1 vegetable make it broccoli

and also add like 7 raspberries a day to your diet

so add broccoli and 7 raspberries to your diet and Vitamin E vitamin pills and it should be healthy

you should exercise all your muscles as well and when you start exerciseing hard you may want to eat more too

and also if you can read and learn more about the Atkins diet that would always help too

Re: New guy, 385 and loosing

If only back in the '70's and 80's I had known what I've learned from the ADBB and DANDR! It would not have been nearly so difficult to get to where I finally am now, weight and health wise.

Eating diets of various descriptions such as the ones mentioned earlier here in this thread resulted for me in increased metabolic resistance, unneccessary less-than-100% wellbeing, increased difficulty (early failure) in staying on the diets then, and general boredome with the particular regimen at the time, after a short while.

Adding a few berries, AFTER you have progressed from Induction phase (where no fruit allowed) to OWL, to the rung for adding berries, is good. During the early phases, however, it is very impotant while variety of foods is more restricted that you supplement potentially lacking vitamins and micronutrients, plus fiber, and a bountiful supply of unadulterated water!

Some of the tiniest, most innocent-seeming ingredients have led to unexpected falures and/or setbacks in progress. Cravings caused by a little sugar in a berry too soon (ie, during induction), can lead to a full-blown loss of control.
