  • Final attempt at weight loss

Hi I thought I'd introduce myself.

I'm 30 years old, male, and I need to lose about 70 pound of fat.

I've tried a variety of diets and exercise plans, to some levels of success but the weight has invariably come back on. Plus I was feeling like crap recently, dizzy and no energy.

By chance I picked up a copy of the book at a used book store, an older edition I think but it's still the New Diet Revolution. I'll be sure to keep it by my side.

Right now I'm on day 5 of the induction phase. I wanted to leave some comments about my experience so far and ask a few questions, and thought I'd drop a line in the intro forum first before I start foraging through the other forums. I have been spending a lot of time on this site for the past several days, and it has been of significant help.

I really want this to work for me, and I wish everyone success with their own efforts. Good luck.

Re: Final attempt at weight loss

Magic, You came to the right place. I also have tried and failed on many, many diets, after previously losing 50-60 lbs on Atkins a decade ago. I am on day 12 of induction and really encouraged by the results I see and feel. Very little between meal eating, almost no hunger and a nice level of energy. By day five, you should start to be seeing some of those same results. In reading your post, we both have set a goal of losing a good deal of weight. I'm glad that you are aboard. Check back here often as your post will get some good responses that will answer all of your questions. I'm too new for that, I just wanted to say that you are in a good place and welcome you to ADBB.

      Hi Monkey,
Welcome to ADBB. It sounds like you have been at this dieting thing for some time. I think you will find Atkins much easier to stick to than your previous diets.

A few questions for you--did your previous diets fail, or did you fail the diets? Usually it is a combination of both. Some diets leave you hungry all the time. You obsess over points or scales, etc. That's when the diets fail you. But at some point you chose to chuck it and go back to old habits. If it was because the diet was too restrictive to maintain that's one thing, but if you eat for other reasons - stress, lack of commitment to losing, depression, poor planning-- those are things that will also happen even on Atkins. Atkins makes it easy to stick to since you aren't hungry and can eat but the other reasons for eating are something to think about if you want this time around to be successful.

Also you need to view this as a permanent change, not a short term detour in your eating.

Just so you know, if your book is the 2002 edition that is the one we follow here and there are some changes from the 90s version.

I wish you great success and hope to see you on the boards.

      GOAL TWO 213 (personal goal)
      GOAL THREE 199 ONE-DERLAND
      FINAL GOAL 165

It's not about the results. Its about the process.

Re: Final attempt at weight loss

Mick - it's good to find someone in a similar position as mine. I do feel many of those signs that you mention, although I know it's still very early.

I'd managed resisted the temptation to go on the scale for three days, but caved in and weighed myself yesterday. Last weekend I weighed 272, the highest my weight has been in a decade, and yesterday it was around 263.

I've seen my weight fluctuate by 2-3 lbs on a daily basis so I'm not putting too much weight on the scale, so to speak, but I do feel my clothes being a little bit looser. I'm waiting until the end of my second week to make a judgment on the success of this plan.

Chinadoll - Thank you for your encouraging words. I most definitely feel that I failed the diets. After each successful "diet", I would go back to previous eating habits and gain all the weight back.

My first real attempt at weight loss was when I was in my early 20's. I weighed about 265lbs then and wore 42-inch pants, and I made a determination to lose weight. I didn't pay too much attention to my eating habits other than cutting out sugary foods and trying to eat low-fat. But I spent 3-4 hours every day in the gym, working out intensely.

I was able to lose nearly 70 pounds in about 5 months. I was young and I really did work out hard. Needless to say, once I returned to college and got a full time job I could not manage working out 4 hours each day. I went back to previous destructive eating habits and gained it all back. In about 2 years.

I made similar attempts several more times during the past ten years or so with similar disasspointing results, with the weight-loss being slower and the yo-yo returning more quickly.

I understand that the Atkins method is a lifetime commitment. Although I'm only a few days into my induction phase, I have not felt the craving for food that has been a constant companion. I still feel hungry, but it's not a powerful urge and I've been trying to eat small portions every 4 hours or so throughout the day and sticking close to the eating plan outlined in the book. I'm also taking a vitamin, omega-3 oil, borage oil and chromium.

After reading the first chapters of the book, I've come to understand the powerful addiction to sugar that I've had since I was a fat kid. In recent years I found myself working out so hard in the gym but going back to eating ice cream, cakes etc. that I began suspecting a mental disorder. How could I know something is so bad, having experienced weight-loss and subsequent weight-gain, and do it again? Like Einstein said, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I believe Dr. Atkins when he said that it's not for a lack of motivation that someone like me goes back to sugar like a dog to vomit but because of the strong hold sugar and sugary foods have on the individual. Again I've only started on this journey, but I'm going to try to stick to the plan as closely as I can for the remaining week and a half in my induction phase, then continue on to the next phases after a careful evaluation.

Didn't mean to drone on, thanks for reading.

Re: Final attempt at weight loss

          Hi and welcome to ADBB.

As Jill said we recommend you get a copy of the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) the book we use for reference on this site. Until you can get a copy of the book check the stickies (information posts) at the top of the induction page - http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html – it’s a condensed version of everything you’ll need to know. Even through the stickies are a good start they don’t detail the entire program, so that’s why we suggest you have the book to follow.

Post often, ask questions join some of the challenges - the more you use the forum the more you'll get out of it.

          Before you start:
*take your measurements and get on the scale so you have accurate numbers to start with - don't weigh again until the end of your 2 week induction.
*Eat a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Also make sure you get your fats, carbs and protein in daily – www.fitday.com will help you keep track of this.
*Drink 64 ounces of pure water -nothing added daily (Legal water is considered Filtered water, Mineral water, Spring water and Tap water).
*Take your supplements and start an exercise routine today.

The Atkins shakes and bars (as well as other brand names of these products) are not legal on induction – there are non-induction ingredients in them and they are not listed on the acceptable food list.

If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list it doesn’t belong in your mouth – no exceptions! Look at the ingredients list and check it against the acceptable food list -- just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it.

The recipe sites are a helpful meal planning tool – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.
