  • New, starting tomorrow

    Hello!
I soo hate introducing myself, but since I expect to be asking for lots of help, it probably makes sense to do it right at the start. I've always thought Atkins was a bit silly, but finally did a little reading (Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes) and it really opened my eyes to the science of weight gain and loss.

I figure it's definitely not going to hurt me, and (at least based on the science) if I still with it long enough it is likely to help me. My doctor even suggested trying a lower carb diet (more than once, actually). Plus, I just finally feel motivated again, and I cannot face the Weight Watchers gulag again.

In terms of goals, I currently weigh 262 (GACK!!), and ideally would like to weight 160. If I stall out at 190-200 (I do have metabolic issues) I may at least in the short term be satisfied with that. We'll see when we get there.

Now, off to the induction forum...

Hi Talulah! I'm new too...started induction last week. So far so good. This is a great site with tons of info and lots of friendly, helpful people. I printed out the induction food lists and look at them all the time...very helpful. Good luck on your first day tomorrow & I look forward to reading more posts from you.

You mean you didn't like that weekly public humiliation? From my experience, WW leaders don't quite know what to do with people who have a lot of weight to lose. I remember being there with the rest of the class (who had about 20#s or so to lose). Those people would come & go as it didn't take them very long to reach goal and there I was...still weighing in every week. Although I was losing it seemed to frustrate the leaders that I was still there & still fat. It would take me years to reach goal using WW...didn't they realize that??? Got tired of the little comments and so I fired them.

I know!! I actually didn't mind that my weight went up and down week to week (up a little one week, down a lot the next, steady for a few, etc), but the danged scale girls would act like I should be in mourning. They always looked surprised when I didn't get all teary (I did WW 3 times, the last time lost 20/25 lbs over about 7 months). I got so sick of it!

        Re: New, starting tomorrow

        Hi and Welcome --

Mizski already gave you the link to the acceptable food list so check the rest of the induction thread out so you have all the information you need to start. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html

Post often, ask questions join some of the challenges - the more you use the forum the more you'll get out of it.

We recommend you get a copy of the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) the book we use for reference on this site. Until you can get a copy of the book check the stickies (information posts) at the top of the induction page -
it’s a condensed version of everything you’ll need to know. Even through the stickies are a good start they don’t detail the entire program, so that’s why we suggest you have the book to follow.

        Before you start:
*take your measurements and get on the scale so you have accurate numbers to start with - don't weigh again until the end of your 2 week induction.
*Eat a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Also make sure you get your fats, carbs and protein in daily – www.fitday.com will help you keep track of this.
*Drink 64 ounces of pure water -nothing added daily (Legal water is considered Filtered water, Mineral water, Spring water and Tap water).
*Take your supplements and start an exercise routine today.

The Atkins shakes and bars (as well as other brand names of these products) are not legal on induction – there are non-induction ingredients in them and they are not listed on the acceptable food list.

If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list it doesn’t belong in your mouth – no exceptions! Look at the ingredients list and check it against the acceptable food list -- just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it.

The recipe sites are a helpful meal planning tool – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

          Re: New, starting tomorrow

Hi Talulah, welcome to ADBB. I hated WW too and find this life much better. Do read the book and take advantage of the wonderful links that Carole has posted--they will answer many questions-even some you didn't know you had!
