  • Newbie a little afraid to start

    Hi all,

I heard from a friend who is on Atkins that she lost so much weight on this diet, and I am absolutely desperate to try and do something to lose the weight. The problem is I'm a little scared to try it. I am categorized as being "morbidly" obese with high BP and my family has a history of type II diabetes and I read that atkins can push forward the onset of diabetes. So I'm torn. Anyone have any advice?

Where did you read that Atkins can push forward on the onset of diabetes? I'd be interested in a citation as an avid reader of all things Atkins.

Best I can say is that I used to take two oral medications for diabetes, test six times a day, give myself two insulin injections a day, take two pills for hypertention, pain medication for rheumatoid arthritis along with other medications.

Happily, I followed Atkins the way it is written and Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. I didn't listen to anyone who had only antecodatal information. I surrounded myself with knowledgeable people here on the board and I've not only lost weight but I am no longer being treated for diabetes now that my A1c has been consistently between just under 6 for six months.

Clearly if you are "scared", read and study DANDR 2002. Knowledge rather than heresay is very powerful. It is important to understand this way of life. The results are described by people who are committed throughout this ADBB.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

Warm welcome aboard. I guarantee, if you start the programme (and follow it to the letter) not only will you not regret it, but your health will improve... and that includes blood sugar.

Atkins is a terrific way to control blood sugar and is helpful in pre-diabetes situations.
I'm willing to bet your BP numbers will improve too, after a few weeks on plan... that's what happens usually.
Give it a go and see how you get along.

We'll help you. We're all in this together!

You can read a lot of stuff about Atkins - most written by people who has no idea what the Atkins diet is. They build in on rumours. Atkins is great for helping people control bloodsugar because you have to cut out the carbs.
Read up on the diet and find out what is involved. Get the book. Atkins writes a lot about diabetes in there. Start planning and getting rid of the carbs in your life. There are many good people here who started where you are and who have found a way to healthy. You can do it too.

Thank you all for the wonderful words! IrishIrish I initially read it here at the american heart association website here: High-Protein Diets . I'll definitely do more research on it. But after lurking in the before/after section and talking to you guys who have found success with it, I'm definitely interested. I'll come back with a REAL introduction soon if I start.

          Thanks!!

I would get a complete physical first, and then I would start on the diet so long as its okay with my doctor.
start small walk 30 mins a day.
            It gets easier.

              Hi!

I can tell you that my husband was diagnosed in May as a type 1 insulin dependant diabetic (his thread is under dawgs2269) and he started the atkins after the doctor suggested a low carb diet to control his sugar. He feels better NOW than when he was 16.

I am not sure about the high protien diet bringing out the onset as I am quite new. But I would definitely research and make the decision that is right for you. If it is NOT atkins, you still need to get healthy for yourself. You do not want diabetes to come out. Then it is not pleasant to deal with.

              Good luck!

Re: Newbie a little afraid to start

                  Hi and welcome to ADBB.

I was diagnosed last year with Type 2 diabetes -- my A1C was over 10 at the time. In January I started Atkins and when I went to my endocrinologist a month and a half ago my A1C was 5.0 -- there is NO basis that Atkins will push you INTO diabetes -- if you follow the plan 100% it will turn it around. At my next visit I am hoping to be taken off the diabetes medication I'm presently taking.

We follow the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) it would be a helpful for you to have a copy of the book to refer to. At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book -
                  http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html

Make a copy of this list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

Drink a minimum of 64 ounces PURE WATER (nothing added) daily - start exercising today (walking, swimming, whatever you can do - just do something - and keep at it). Take a good multi-vitamin and most importantly eat correctly. These are the keys to loosing weight with Atkins and changing your life.
The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

Re: Newbie a little afraid to start

Thank you so much! I'll take a look at all that info. I've actually been doing cardio for 45 minutes everyday and drinking about 10 glasses of water for the last 2 weeks (a MAJOR lifestyle change on both accounts). I feel better, and my blood pressure is definitely down. The problem is, I only JUST realized how many carbs I've been eating! I have been eating bananas and pasta and bread everyday bc I thought carbs would boost my energy! No wonder I've only lost 3 pounds.

Hey guys! So I've officially started Atkins! Well mostly, I slipped and had some strawberries but I can't bring myself to feel guilty about it. Haha. Anyway this is day 2 and I've lost 3 pounds already, which is really exciting. I'm EXTREMELY new to cooking, and I just tried to make oopsie rolls with the most disastrous results possible. But I'll keep trying! This in combination with cardio 5 days a week hopefully I'll see some results.

make sure you are only eating foods on the acceptable food list -- you have 1 chance to do a clean induction and find out your metabolic resistance ..... http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html. If something isn't on the list .... you don't eat it!

glad you are drinking water and exercising - those are 2 HUGE things you can do for yourself and it costs little to nothing to do!

Well I officially have Induction Flu. Ugh.
And the only part I'm mad about is not being able to walk today if it feels like this in a couple of hours

Induction flu is a transition and you want to get into ketosis - so way to go.
Don't worry about your exercise today. You will have the energy soon. I just watched TV and read a book. Pampering is good. Drink plenty of water.

Metabolic resistance had to do how well you respond to induction eating. There is a chart on pg 158. But for you to find out where you stand you need to be a strict induction eater. But hang in there. You are obviously doing very well.
