My name is Melodey and i am new here as well as to the atkins way of life. i admit it...i am a carb-aholic! I have struggled with weight issues my whole life...at my heaviest i was 209 when i was 14 years old. I lost weight by eating healthy and exercise and by the time i graduated highschool, i was 135. i am 5'0 and have an athletic build so i was comfortable at 135. I am currently 28 years old, married for 2 years to a wonderful guy and in july 09 I gave birth to our first child. With the pregnancy i gained 50 pounds...even though i went to the gym religiously and tried to watch what i ate. I finally realize that i eat wayyyyy to many carbs and this time around it will be a struggle to loose the weight that i gained. SOOOOO....I am turning to the Atkins diet with the hope this will help me get myself back!

Re: Drastic life change!
Drastic eh? I think for us carboholics it sure can be.
I am just going to add the standard thing about breastfeeding and Atkins. It is not recommended to do Atkins induction foods while breastfeeding but you can cut carbs to a maintenance level.
Have you had a chance to look at our stickies? We have lot of great information here. Check out the FAQ forum.
Have you had a chance to buy the ATkins book. We use the 2002 version here. It was the last one written by Atkins.
Lots of luck to you.
Congratulations with your boy. Babies are wonderful things (a bit demanding but wonderful) My kid is in high schools (sigh)

Re: Drastic life change!
Welcome to the Atkins Board Melodey.
As Liv said above, if you aren't breastfeeding here is some information to help get you started correctly. The 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) is the book we follow here. It would be a helpful for you to have a copy of the book to refer to (www.amazon.com or www.half.com have inexpensive copies). At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book - (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html
Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise starting today and taking a multi-vitamin without iron (you should get enough iron with the foods you are eating on Atkins).
Check all around the board for everything there is to, there is a challenge section with both exercise and non exercise challenges, Rate My Menu for help with your food, journaling – something for everyone.
Make a copy of this list (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).
The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.
