  • New *kinda*

I joined this board last year after I read the Atkins diet new revolution book. I think I joined mainly to read the success stories. I did the Atkins diet for three weeks with my husband and lost 13lbs the first three weeks. After a BBQ at a friends house we caved, gave up and reasoned with ourselves that the diet was too ridiculous to follow and gained all the weight plus some back. This was the result of a few cereal and pizza binges I'm sure.

In my gut I knew better. I knew because I had read the book that the diet and WOL made sense but as a food addict it was easier to convince myself that I needed bread to live : )

So here I am now, probably 40lbs heavier than I was last year and desperate for a change. I've made every excuse in the book but I realize I cannot go through another summer with three kids this heavy. I've never really felt "obese" before until now. My legs hurt on the treadmill, I have cramps in my feet at night and I'm tired all the time. I shouldn't feel this way at 29.

This year we went to the beach for vacation and I was comfortable walking into the ocean in my bathing suit. Some might think it's a good thing but it wasn't. I realized at that moment I had settled with being obese. We're going to the beach again next year and I want to feel comfortable for the right reasons.

My health in general is not bad. Blood sugar is ok, B/P is fine. However, I have had issues with rapid heartrate for several years (this is genetic I think, not weight related). I started taking a beta-blocker for this in March and since then I've gained 30lbs. Ironically, I caved and starting taking the medication so I could run on the treadmill, the medicine allowed me to do this without my heart pounding in my throat.

Anyway, I am a huge carnivore (red meat is my favorite sadly), so this diet will work well for me. I don't like cheese (in any form) but I do like salads and eggs on occasion so I think I'll have some options for induction. I'm looking forward to reading everyones posts and having support here on the board. I'm starting induction tomorrow so I hope to be posting a weight loss report in a couple of weeks!

My final goal could probably be lower but this is what I weight before I had my first child and I was fine with this, I felt athletic and energetic.

    Welcome!

As J pointed out this is a high fat diet that focuses on veggies more than meat. Break out your book and give it another read. Your story makes me think that if you commit to this you have really thought about the things that will allow you to succeed, but do it right, move on to OWL after Induction, and you will be feeling much better walking onto that beach next year.

Welcome back to the Atkins Board.

First of all, Atkins is not a "diet" or a way to loose "a few pounds" it's also not "silly" it's a very nutritious way of living - a way of eating over a lifetime. Make sure you read the book again - it will give you the knowledge you need to get to your goal (2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution [DANDR]), eat only the foods on the acceptable food list and eat a variety of foods and vegetables. (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs) http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html.

A few tips to help get you started: Drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water daily (nothing added), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin - these are mandatory with Atkins so start now and get off on the right foot. The challenges are starting at the beginning of the month so look to see if there are any you can join.

        Good luck to you!

Ok. The book I read is an older version (1992) and states that the first two weeks of the diet be meat, eggs, cheese and 1 salad per day only. I am going to read the updated version as soon as it arrives by mail. I assumed that the plans were at least similar so I could go ahead and get started. I don't think this diet is "all meat, no veggies" and am sorry it came across that way. I was only referring to the induction I had knowledge about.

As far as the term "diet". I use this loosely due to the fact that I am a nurse and diet to me is how you are eating, not necessarily a "temporary change with a goal of weight loss". For example, people can be on a "low sodium diet" or a "regular diet" even. Typically my "diet" is bad, I eat junk and fast food. Now my "diet" will be low in carbs, high in protein. I didn't realize using it this way was such a big deal on these boards but I'll change my wording from now on.

By the way, first day of induction went well. I'm not wanting to kill for a twinkie yet.

The FAQs should help you get started until your book arrives. And ask in the forums any questions you might have.

Now my "diet" will be low in carbs, high in protein.
I'm not sure what you mean by "high in protein", but protein should only account for about 25-30% of your total calories. The diet is high in fat.

I didn't realize using it this way was such a big deal on these boards
I think that's just because most people use "diet" with a different meaning... as if it's something that one does for X weeks to lose weight before returning to one's "normal" way of eating.

I'm not wanting to kill for a twinkie yet.
That's good. I've heard they don't serve low carb food in prison.

Thank you all. I'm having to change my start date to tomorrow (12/08/09). After I posted my intro I got the flu and have been living on crackers, soup and sprite for the past week or so. Didn't lose any weight either! How is that even possible?!?! Thanks again. Looking forward to really getting started.
