  • coming home to Atkins

    Hi, everyone,

I lost quite a bit of weight on Atkins/low carb a few years ago (about 30-35 pounds?). Unfortunately, I've had quite a bit of carb creep in the last couple of years and am finding myself gaining the weight back. November was pretty bad because I didn't exercise due to being busy and injured from jogging this past summer. I kept baking cookies and eating crackers and chips. Diabetes runs in my family, and I had gestational diabetes twice, and I know that my body just can't handle a lot of carbs.

On Thursday, I decided to get strict with myself and go back on Atkins. I'm not quite on induction, more like early OWL, except that I'm eating small amounts of carrots and white wine.

The nice thing about this go-round is that I know exactly what to eat. The first time my husband and I went on Atkins, we had to learn how to eat vegetables! The challenge about this time is that I have children, and so there is some tempting food in the house but not too much. It doesn't bother me like I used to, and I don't feel deprived, although I do miss sweet tastes. I feel a lot better already without my blood sugar bouncing around, and it seems I've shed some water. It's also nice to be able to control myself around food. I can't seem to eat bread products or sweets without overindulging!

My goal is to fit comfortably into size 8 pants. I'm currently squeezing into 12's.

Signs I needed to get back on track:
    • khaki pants split
    • had stopped weighing myself (denial)
    • kept cropping most of my body out of photos
    • shoes not fitting (this happens when I reach a certain weight)

What really got me though was that I had to be weighed at my son's 2-year well child visit. He refused to stand on the scale for reasons known only to him, and so he had to be weighed by me holding him and then subtracting my weight! So, I was forced to see how much I weigh, and I've gained about 10 pounds since June.

It's funny to me because a pant splitting incident and a dislike of photos of myself are what got me started on Atkins back in 2003! Here I go again, and I'm at least thankful I didn't let myself get quite up to the level I was at before.

    Hello, Erica!

So, what's on your OWL menu today? Also, what's stopping you from dropping the carrots and wine until their appropriate Rungs?

Hi, Shrew 2U. What's stopping me? I don't want to stop eating carrots or drinking white wine, and I don't mind if it slows my weight loss some. I also didn't want to go on straight induction because I want to eat more of the category 2 veggies. Since I've done this before, I know what foods give me cravings and what foods do not. I found going by the book to be extremely useful the first time because I could not imagine ever living without large amounts of carbs, and I learned that I could. I used to drink a glass of OJ every morning, and I would eat carbs all day b/c I was hungry all the time.

This morning I had scrambled eggs with onion, cherry tomato, cucumber, garlic, & cheese. For lunch I had a salad with lettuce, grilled chicken, cucumber, cherry tomato, and 2 baby carrots, with homemade balsamic vinegarette. Not sure what to do about dinner...

Hi Erica. Welcome. While we shy away from carrots, your menu looks great. Have you checked out Lindas menus and recipe site. I found it to be my lifesaver. Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes - Home

Fair enough - slow and steady usually wins the race when it comes to weight loss, anyway. I can't argue with the desire to eat more vegetables, either (others will argue plenty).

So I suppose your major challenge will be maintenance more than anything else (not unusual). I also have a higher risk of developing diabetes (developed GD with my second pregnancy), so I don't mind losing slow...if I can keep off the pounds I do lose.

Sounds really good. One thing I love is to season a frozen salmon filet (6oz) with 1T olive oil and salt/pepper/thyme (to taste), then throw it into a foil packet with 2T of white wine, 1t capers, 1T lemon juice and as much sliced zucchini as I can fit. 30-40 minutes at 350 degrees, nothing to clean but a knife, a cutting board and the plate/utensils I eat with.
