  • Hello new from Ohio

I am starting the atkins diet today. I did it a few years ago and lost about 20lbs then quit when my second son was born (lost my focus). Im about 6ft tall and my goal weight is around 195. I am up to about 230 right now. my wife is somewhat against the atkins, but its the only diet I think i can stick to that has truly worked in the past. From what i have read it is healthy as long as you follow it correctly.

My only complaint when I did do the diet was that I had a loss of energy, I am hoping a multi vitamin and suppliments will take care of that this time.
My other concern is that I do work out regularly, mostly just weight training. I am courious how much strength I will lose, or if it will be possible to maintain my current strength levels while on the atkins.
Any tips or input will be a huge help. thanks!

All the time or only in the beginning?

You will maintain them and probably even improve them more than if you followed a high carb, low calorie diet, because diets low in carbohydrate with adequate protein and caloric intakes preserve lean body mass much better. Add to this exercise, which is mandatory on Atkins, and you should have nothing to worry about.

I was only on the diet for a little over a month, and my energy dropped after the first few days and didn't improve while I was on the diet.

Make sure you are not undereating. Ketosis has an appetite suppressant effect and for some of us it is easy to undereat.

A growling stomach is not the only symptom of hunger/low blood sugar. Feeling tired, weak, lightheaded or sleepy, being dizzy, having difficulties with concentrating, etc. (see the Blood Sugar Symptoms Test in Chapter 12 of DANDR 2002) can all indicate a blood sugar instability.

Make sure you eat some carbs - like the required veggies. And move to more carbs as soon as you are done with the induction. I am not a guy but I do a lot of exercise and for me energy has not been an issue. Hopefully you will fine some too. Welcome.

Thanks for the pointers. The first time I was on the diet, I thought the less carbs the better, so I didn't eat any veggies or take suppliments. I guess I was asking for low energy issues.

I lost a lot of strength last time I did this WOE. I lost pounds and 50 pounds off my bench. This was over the course of 5 months. I did not do any lifting for the first 3 1/2 months, so that was a large contributor. I did a fair amount of cardio, but nowhere near what I was supposed to be doing. Once I started lifting again and getting back to my old routine, I gained all of my strength back in 6 weeks. I did gain weight at an alarming rate at first due to water retention. If you plan to lift your normal routine, be wary of low energy your first week or so as you could get the induction flu.

                  Welcome back to Atkins

Make sure you read the book - it will give you the knowledge you need to get to your goal. If you can’t find a copy locally of the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) check online at www.half.com or www.amazon.com – I got a “used” copy recently for less than $5.00 including shipping.

Plan your meals for a few days so you have everything in your home and you won’t be tempted to eat something not allowed. Eat only foods listed on the acceptable food list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html (What foods can be eaten on Induction?) make sure you eat a variety of foods and vegetables and count all “net carbs”. The closer you stay to 20 net carbs daily the better you'll feel - since you weren't eating vegetables the last time you tried Atkins that's probably the reason you had so little energy....like I said before, read the book and you'll find out exactly how to do the plan correctly.

Check Linda's recipe site it will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html. Drink a minimum 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin daily. Look at the challenges to see if there is anything that interests you - start a journal, it's a great place to get everything out in the open, be accountable to yourself - you'll also meet some great people there! http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...journal-chats/. There’s something for everyone here!

"Atkins" without vegetables is not Atkins though.

And you need good nutrition. Weight loss is only one of the benefits of Atkins. Good health should be another.

                    or take suppliments
Why no supplements? These should be incredibly low in carbs. Mine have 0.07 g of carbohydrate per tablet (I'm in Europe, that's why I know the carb counts).

Take at least a multivitamin without iron.
