  • Brand New to the board

Hello my name is Ray, and I am fat.

I started my diet 3 weeks ago, and a little over a week ago I decided to go Adkins.

I started at 345.5 LBs. Over the first two weeks I managed to drop 12 lbs, but during one week of Adkins I dropped almost 12 lbs.

Currently I am 321.8. I have set many goals for myself:

6 weeks into the diet I would like to be under 300.
By the end of June, family vacation to Disney, I want to be 250.

I am not a big sugar or sweets eater, maybe soda, my vice is starch. Pasta, Rice, Potatoes and bread.

I am doing pretty good right now on the diet, I don't eat a lot per day so I think that is why I dropped so much the first week. Normal day I eat 2 boiled eggs for breakfast, 2 more for lunch, then a couple pieces of boiled chicken breast for dinner. When I have time the morning I might make a cheese omellett.

I just hope to gain and keep strength on these boards, and get ideas from others on how to keep it up.

    Have you read DANDR 2002?

No, I haven't read Dandr 2002. Should I? I haven't check my pee or any of the stuff discribed in other threads yet. I am a newby, and trying to understand this diet.

I have had some onions, but that is it on the veggie front. I snack on pepperoni slices. I don't eat a lot of cheese either.

I think if you want to do Atkins you should find out what it is. Atkins was into health so vegetables are quite prominent on the list of what we should eat.

Check out the book for sure.

Welcome to ADBB. Glad to have you here.

          Hi,

If you haven't read the book, what are you using as the Guidlines to follow The Atkins Way of Eating?

From what you have told us, you are not following Atkins. If you follow the plan correctly, I think you will see a lot of success and be happy with the results.

I am going off the induction phase to eat less than 20 grams of carbs a day. I have done that. I looked at the what you can and can not eat. I admit I need to do more research. What am I doing that is wrong right now, so I can correct it right away?

I understand you are on Induction, but where are you getting your info from to follow this? From a friend, a website, etc?

If you are not reading the book, where are you "reading" the rules of what to eat and how to follow"?

As we said, you are not following Atkins from what you wrote.
If you read the links Liv posted, maybe then you can ask questions. To tell you what you are doing wrong, all I can say is-- first read how to do the Atkins WOE. There is more than what are you doing wrong...You need to read how to do it right. Can't just tell you in a few sentences. You need to read how to do it. Then we will be able to help you better.

Re: Brand New to the board

I went online to find out the general outline and what can and can not be consumed. Looking at the list, I picked and chose which foods I actually like, and what would be easiest for me to make and eat while at work and at home. I don't get bored with foods, so I can eat the same thing for weeks on end. Not much into vegetables, except for carrots(which is not allowed), onions and celery, so I don't each them on a regular basis. I prefer fruits.

I didn't start off trying low carb as I explained, and I was finding success. I just wanted to see if there was something else out there that my increase my weight loss over a shorter period of time.

So if I am doing something completely wrong, let me know. Do I have to eat vegetables? Should I not eat eggs and chicken? What is it?

Re: Brand New to the board

These are the rules as I understand.

                  1. Eat either three regular-size meals a day or four or five smaller meals. Do not skip meals or go more than six waking hours without eating.( I eat regularly, and snack when needed. I never go lover than 6 hours without eating except when sleeping)

                  2. Eat liberally of combinations of fat and protein in the form of poultry, fish, shellfish, eggs and red meat, as well as pure, natural fat in the form of butter, mayonnaise, olive oil, safflower, sunflower and other vegetable oils (preferably expeller-pressed or cold-pressed). (This is pretty much my whole diet)

                  3. Eat no more than 20 grams a day of carbohydrate, most of which must come in the form of salad greens and other vegetables. You can eat approximately three loosely packed cups of salad, or two cups of salad plus one cup of other vegetables (see Acceptable Foods). (Again this is what I do)

                  4. Eat absolutely no fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter. Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks. Foods that combine protein and carbohydrates, such as chickpeas, kidney beans and other legumes, are not permitted at this time. I follow this rule also

                  5. Eat nothing that isn't on the Acceptable Foods list. And that means absolutely nothing. Your "just this one taste won't hurt" rationalization is the kiss of failure during this phase of Atkins. Done and Done

                  6. Adjust the quantity you eat to suit your appetite, especially as it decreases. When you're hungry, eat the amount that makes you feel satisfied, but not stuffed. When you're not hungry, eat a small controlled carbohydrate snack to accompany your nutritional supplements. Again I do just that.

                  7. Don't assume any food is low in carbohydrate instead, read labels. Check the carb count (it's on every package) or use a carbohydrate gram counter. Pretty simple

                  8. Eat out as often as you wish but be on guard for hidden carbs in gravies, sauces and dressings. Gravy is often made with flour or cornstarch, and sugar is sometimes an ingredient in salad dressing. I prefer not to eat out because I don't want to be tempted

9.Avoid foods or drinks sweetened with aspartame. Instead, use sucralose or saccharin. Be sure to count each packet of any of these as 1 gram of carbs. Try to drink nothing but water

                  10. Avoid coffee, tea and soft drinks that contain caffeine. Excessive caffeine has been shown to cause low blood sugar, which can make you crave sugar. I try to avoid, but I have had a cup of coffee, black

                  11. Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day to hydrate your body, avoid constipation and flush out the by-products of burning fat. I drink lots of water, all day long

                  12. If you are constipated, mix a tablespoon or more of psyllium husks in a cup or more of water and drink daily. Or mix ground flaxseed into a shake or sprinkle wheat bran on a salad or vegetables. No issues there

                  13. At a minimum, take a good daily multivitamin with minerals, including potassium, magnesium and calcium, but without iron. I do that too.

                  Extra Cautions:

Stay away from diet products unless they specifically state "no carbohydrates." Most such foods are for low-fat diets, not controlled carbohydrate plans.
The words sugarless, sugar-free or "no sugar added" are not sufficient. The label must state the carbohydrate content; that's what you must go by.
Many products you do not normally think of as foods, such as chewing gum, breath mints, cough syrups and cough drops, are filled with sugar or other caloric sweeteners. They must be avoided.
Be wary of prepared salads at salad bars or deli counters. For example, cole slaw or even tuna-fish salad may have been prepared with sugar.

Where am I going wrong? Let me know.

Again, I eat the vegetables that our allowed that I like. Forcing it is not going to make it easy for anyone.

As for my stomach, I have had stomach issues ever since I had my gall bladder taken out. My body does not digest fat well. I usually combat that by eating brown rice, not allowed in induction, which really helps in the digestion process.

Your first post of what you said you eat did not mention any veggies, then you said you eat "some onion". Then you asked if you "had to eat veggies.
So it seems you are having a little trouble with the veggie part.

What I and others said, is eating vegetables is a key part of the Atkins plan. Check it out and see if this is something you can live with. We will be glad to help you if it is.

I eat some onions, and some cucumbers, and some celery.

I didn't mention them because it is a very small part of what I eat. Usually just as snacks. I have been on this diet for a short period of time. When I make my cheese omelett I sometime throw on Tomatoes, green pepper, and onion.

I have not got into the habit of measuring or journaling. I think I will try to do so.
