Hey everyone. My name is Nicole, and I'm brand new to both this board and atkins. In fact, this is my first low carb diet ever!
I'm trying to lose 30 pounds post-pregnancy. I'm 5'4, and I weigh 154 currently. My weight throughout my adult life has been between 120-130.
So, why am I chosing low carb instead of just dieting to lose the weight and going to normal habits?
Both my grandparents were diabetic. My father was recently diagnosed with diabetes as well. My dad, however, does not require medication. In fact, he's lowered his blood sugar to a normal level - under 100, fasting. You can almost say he "beat" diabetes. You know how he did it? He doesn't eat any carbs, other than vegetables, berries, fruits, nuts, beans, and cheeses. That's right - he lives his life in the OWL section of Atkins, right before the part where you add in whole grains. He looks fantastic. He feels fantastic. And best of all, he's going to live longer for it.
My blood sugar pre-pregnancy was always normal, maybe slightly high. Usually it'd be in the high 80s. I wasn't concerned about it. Then post-pregnancy, I got my bloodwork done. It came back as 99. I don't know how much of that is from the weight I put on and how much is from the last few months of chocolate craving insanity, but I know it scared me. Enough that I want to beat my cravings and do 14 days of induction. Enough that I think - know - I can live a great low carb life.
It's a big change. I'm on day 4, so I really don't feel like I'm conquering the world yet. I know I won't be able to go forever without a bite of chocolate, but I think I can learn how it interacts with my body. I can minimize it's effect by pairing it with certain foods, and it can be a very rare occurence. And that's completely okay with me, if it means I'm healthier and living better. (Of course, no chocolate until OWL and pre-maintenance are long over!!)
I'm looking forward to all of you all's advice. I know I can use it!

Haha, yeah, that's my only real weakness. I had no cravings until today, and now nothing will take it away.
