  • Nothing to Lose

    Hello Folks,
Sampling various posts on this site have left me questioning if any of this is legit or merely more advertising for Atkins.
I've read both the positives and negative publicity about the program but at this point I have nothing to lose.
Even if what many are saying in the medical community is correct and that this program is not safe long term, if I can lose enough weight on this program to get on the right path that's a step in the right direction.

I've battled (and surrendered to) my weight my entire life and with the exception of a successfull battle back in the early nineties- I've lost.

I've been out of work for over a year now and for the first time find myself
unemployed with far too much time on my hands- you can guess the result.

I missed out on my dream job some fourteen years ago due to fitness and it seems like I may have another shot IF I can get into better shape this year.
    I'm 43 6'3 and nearly 300 pounds now.
If I could drop fifty, I'd be dancing in the streets!
    (Or at least jiggling less.)
This may be my last chance.

    Re: Nothing to Lose

Welcome TooFar -- Atkins is safe over the long term - go to the journal area or to the celebration area to read of the many people who have lost AND successfully kept the weight off long term with no adverse results to their health. As a matter of fact nothing but better health comes from eating this way if followed correctly.

My first suggestion is to get a copy of the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution book - inexpensive copies are available on amazon or half.com if you can't find one locally - read the book so you know the science Dr Atkins has put together to prove his plan and start becoming more healthy by using the plan.

Drink plenty of water daily - 64oz is the minimum of plain water recommended. Eat foods on the acceptable food list (http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html), take a vitamin w/o iron and exercise. To keep from eating the same thing over and over check Linda's recipe site http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/. Plan your meals for a few days so you have everything legal in your home. After your 2 week induction move to OWL Rung 1 and start adding foods back to your daily meals. Most of your weight should be lost on OWL, not on induction.

Most of all believe in the plan AND in yourself. You can do this. Good luck.

How critical is the urine monitoring? If the numbers are going down on the scale something must be happening correct?

Most on here will tell you that the urine sticks aren't reliable, as there are other factors than can affect them and cause them to change color. You don't need them. As long as you follow the rules (especially the first 2 weeks) you will see weight loss.

Using ketostix, you mean? I don't use them. It's not necessary... and I would recommend using the money on something else.

          Yep.

And sometimes you might lose body fat without the number on the scale going down. Take body measurements, too.

And even during times when you'll lose no weight or inches, your health will still improve if you follow Atkins correctly.

              Hello Folks,

              Hi there!

Sweet HenryJezabel, no. Seriously, while this board focuses ONLY on Atkins 2002, you'll find the vast majority pariahs in the eyes of Atkins corp who want to sell people convenience foods. There are no Atkins Nutritionals apologists here, but if you insult Dr Atkins, the man, well, we might have to meet out back.

Last chances are for people on Dancing with the Stars, but never in terms of health and weight loss. You've already learned so much about yourself in the process of weight loss and what works for you over the years. Atkins works because it combines healthy, whole foods with satisfying healthy fats and proteins. Save for the whole 'eating grass' thing, we meet or exceed the recommendations of the Food Pyramid. That's saying something--people are full of crap when it comes to Atkins.
