Hello,
I am on day 23 of Atkins and I am not planning to weigh myself until I make it a full month. I do notice more energy during the day and I am sleeping better at night. Clothes seem to fit a little better - less tight.
A little background: I am a former college football player and a former U.S. Marine who was always in shape - or mostly in shape - during my mid-30's I did have one period of about a year and one-half when I was about 30 pounds overweight. I tried many diets, diet pills, etc., and bounced around to being my ideal weight and being 30 pounds overweight ... Atkins was one of those successfule yoyo time periods.
About three years ago I had a liver transplant, actually two liver transplants as the first time my body rejected the new liver. I was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (Bile duct closure which causes Cirrhosis) about seven years ago .. on the waiting list for over 4 years. After the transplant I was very, very, thin .. under 150 pounds .. and I looked like a skeleton. I had no apetite at all ... and my doctor told me to eat at least 5,000 calories a day. Eventually, my apetite returned and I did start to gain weight ... too much weight ... and due to my health and vigor not fully returning ... I could not exercise very much ... then I became fat and happy with my new lease on life.
Now, after I no longer feel rejection, and my outlook on living quite a bit longer has improved ... I want to feel better, be happier, and don't want to buy/wear expandable waistband pants.
I can't say that I am really 100% following the induction phase guidelines but I listen to my Atkins audio book on my way to work and I think I know the pitfalls and errors. I do drink quite a few diet sodas per day and I am trying to convert to water. I have never drank alchohol exceed upon special occasions. I have started walking again ... about two miles per day.
Unless I let myself think about the bad times during the pre/post liver transplant time period ... I am a very happy and upbeat person ... when I lose that weight and can get back out on the dance floor ... I will be as good as new.
This forum has proved to be a valuable tool in keeping my confidence up ...
