    Re: Coconut Oil

Last week, I just rediscovered my coconut oil (in my refrigerator). Since then, I've fried pork chops in it, sauteed vegetables in it and put some in my hot beverages. I was feeling a little tired and blah before using it. But, now I feel so energetic. I like the idea of keeping a container at work to 'snack' on in the afternoon when I get that low energy feeling. And, the cocoa bark, hand cream uses are great ideas too!

I bought the Jarrow brand--extra virgin coconut oil. It has a coconutty smell and when refrigerated, it looks just like the meat of a coconut. It does have a slight coconut flavor which works really well on pork and hot beverages.

      Re: Coconut Oil

Okay, after reading this thread the other day it peeked my interest. Yesterday I went out and bought some Extra Virgin Coconut Oil from Vitamin World. Total with tax was $14.99 for 16 oz. Not sure if that is a good price, but it seems to be the number I saw a few of you mention. Anyways, I got it home and decided right then and there that I would bust it open and try it. So here I am, no qualms whatsoever about it, pull out a tablespoon from the drawer, pop open the lid, take a big spoonful and jammed it in my mouth. Considering the results of my "experiment" I guess this isn't the way to do it. I held it in my mouth for a second or two and then had to run over to the sink because I was so disgusted! I thought I would be fine because I absolutely LOVE coconut, but the feeling of a tablespoon of that oil in my mouth was enough to make me gag. I did use it for cooking my eggs in this morning and I absolutely loved it though (though it does seem to cook slightly slower than with butter)! The eggs tasted slightly different from when I use butter to fry them, but the nice thing is I've really been trying to watch my sodium intake and using the coconut oil instead of the salted butter helps a lot!

Two questions for those of you more familiar with the coconut oil though.
      1) If I warm it up would this make for a good dressing for salad and veggies? I may try it at lunch time just to see. I live and die by Russian dressing when it comes to my veggies, but as I said I LOVE coconut and this seems it could be a new, and better, choice for dressing.

      2) Anyone have any experience with the coconut oil pills? They had a bottle of them at Vitamin World when I picked up the oil. Any opinions about them? Unfortunately I don't have any of the nutritional info from the side, didn't even bother to look, but thought maybe someone knew on here.

Either way thanks for helping me find a new and tasty oil to use!

        Re: Coconut Oil

I'm with you Ryan, I just don't know about eating it neat. The pills sound like a good idea and I don't know why you couldn't put it on a salad except when it hit the cold lettuce, it might solidify and make it nasty again.
The more I think about buying organic, (which I also did), the more I wonder if its worth the price... That thick hard shell would keep out any pesticides you would think and I dont even know if they use pesticides on palm trees?

          Hi Ryan,
I read somewhere early this morning that the suggested amount of coconut oil to take daily is around 3.5 tablespoons. 1 tablespoon is 14 grams. The largest softgel is 1000 mg. So you'd have to roughly take 49 capsules a day

              Re: Coconut Oil

perhaps ryan you should try a smaller quantity instead of a big spoonful? my mom just puts a little in her coffee in the morning, and is going to work her way up to trying to eat it later. personally i have no real problem just taking it out of the jar, but i think if i used a bigger spoon i probably would gag too! i just look at it as something i have to do, like my vitamins, and at least it tastes better than my vitamins! oh and my jar was 13 bucks, but i got it from a store that is known to be overpriced, so i think you and i probably got screwed lol

                Re: Coconut Oil

Yea...I am gonna make my chicken with it this afternoon and try and drizzle some on my salad as well, and then maybe I'll try a smaller spoonful as a kind of dessert? LOL...I don't know. Just diving in headfirst is something I tend to do so it isn't that surprising, but I don't drink coffee or tea and that seems to be what most people on this thread were saying they put it in? Personally the thought of putting it in coffee or tea is even more off-putting to me...I rarely drink either and if someone stuck coconut oil in mine I'd probably throw it at them and curse them out.

Hi Ryan - I have mixed it with cream and/or cream cheese (melt the oil first - mix it in and leave it to 'set.' The one I have is quite 'coconutty' in taste so it gives you a kind of coconut cream for a dessert topping.

hey Ryan I'm with you -- I tried it in my coffee but it was just too much for me, so I put it in the frypan when I cook meat and I also put it in veggetables when I cook them. Everytime I hear someone puts it in their coffee I remember how horrible my lips felt after I tried it....I swear I felt like I was a chapstick dispenser...LOL!!!

I tried to actually eat it off the spoon today...well - the taste itself wasn't bad - it was the texture of having a heavy oil/lard like substance in my mouth. I only had about a tsp - couldn't imagine a tbsp - but maybe i can work my way up. :P

Well imagine my surprise when i come here to find all these people trying coconut oil for the first time , much like i did about two weeks ago. I LOVE it! A spoonful in my coffee and cream, YUM! I also toast unsweetend coconut, and Pecans, then mix it with the coconut oil, a little splenda, and almond extract and dark coco powder. mix it all up and then press them into candy molds.
I also made peanutbutter cups. make the choc. coconut oil, splenda to taste, then take natural peanut butter, w/ a little coconut oil and whey powder to stiffen it up and splenda to sweeten it up a bit. form small balls slightly flattend, put them in the candy cup molds, then pour choc. mixture over it. Chill. Very good.
