  • May day --- may day

Well, it's official - it's May Day. I remember May Day from my childhood where we would make a candy holder out of a piece of construction paper (a funnel shaped holder) and would fill it with small pieces of candy, gum, etc. I always liked to put a piece of lilac at the top of mine (a little "interior" decorating even before I knew what it was. And I'd go to a friend's home, hang the candy funnel on the door, ring the bell (or knock) and R U N!!!!! I remember one boy in Kansas, Bart B. who caught me as I was getting into the car, he pulled me out of the car, kissed me and walked back to the house.....ahhhh - that was - I just KNEW we'd be getting married someday (NOT)... ROFL!!!

This month something has to give....I've been stuck for awhile at this weight so I'm going to take a real tough look at what I can do to get going again. I've added a few challenges back that I was doing to being with with good results, I'm riding 15 or 20 miles on the bike several times a week, my water intake is always good so it has to be the food I'm eating. It's time to tweak things again!

Good luck to any and all who pass through this thread -- it's time to get going

Re: May day --- may day

I remember dancing around the Maypole in elementary school. Each of us held a long ribbon and with much coaching from the teachers, we ended up with a pretty woven pattern on the pole. The details are a little vague now.

I'm also stuck, and don't know what to do, other than more veggies. I am hoping next week's veggie challenge will help.

I loved dancing around the May pole!! We use to make May baskets & fill them with stuff. I remember giving the basket to my mom every year. Good memories!

Re: May day --- may day

oh yes....the dreaded May Pole. We had a May Day dance in 7th grade...my parents were chaperoning (of course!), Robbie Robinson ask me to dance a slow dance.....he danced me right into the May pole, which fell over and all the crate paper decorations came down....everyone laughed, I ran.....ahhhh...the dreaded May Pole!

I remember one May Day in Kansas where we had the long ribbons and were doing our little May pole thing making the pretty decorative pattern on the pole but the wind was whippinng around so much it was hard to hold onto the ribbons....I don't think we had a real pretty May pole that year....but it was fun.

It's sad that kids now don't get to experience the fun, no cost entertainment we had as kids. Parents spend so much time taking them places, to scoccer, the mall, to a friends house, When they are home they are sitting in front of the computer or TV playing games they have no idea what to do. I got $1.00 a week allowance but I had to clean my room and clean the family room for that dollar!

I remember kick the can, ollie ollie ox in free, using a stick and pushing anything round running down the street, tag, catching lightening bugs and pulling their tails off, or catching them and putting them in jar with grass. Ghost stories under the weeping willow tree in our backyard - my dad was a master ghost story teller!! Congregating under the street light and talking....I had a cheap, fun, creative childhood!

I had a cheap, wonderfully creative childhood, too.

Swing the Statue, Red Rover, Hide and Seek, Mother May I, building huts out of anything available, climbing trees, fishing for little bream in the creek... catching lightning bugs (although I never pulled the tails off -- just put them in jars), jump rope games, beachcombing and digging in the sand for beach critters, splashing in the waves, racing down dunes until the momentum would keep me running forever on the beach, fish fries and weiner roasts on the beach at night, and just unending fun and running and playing.

I think that is why I enjoy camping so much. It's a break from the artificial world back into a world where exploration and creative entertainment gives me a bit of that feeling of wild and never-ending freedom back.
