So I found these tasty little chocolate covered toffee squares. When I add up the carbs they come out to ZERO net carbs. There are 24 total carbs but 1 is dietary fiber and the other 23 are sugar alcohols. So can I eat as many as I want as long as I don't go crazy (they do have 9grams saturated fats per serving)? Is it total carbs or total NET carbs that really matter?

Re: Russell Stover's Toffee Squares
Yummy! Only thing is that their not Induction friendly.
Make sure you read the ingrediants. If they have milk in them, they'll have to wait untill Rung 2. If they have nuts, it will have to wait until Rung 3. Chocolate is a Rung 3 food as well.
You are only to eat what is on the Induction food list starting on page 124, DANDR 2002 when on Induction. This is the book we go by on this bulletin board.
Have you read the book? Very important.

Re: Russell Stover's Toffee Squares
Are they made of maltitol? If so, they have a glycemic index of 52. Pure sugar has a glycemic index of 62--not much difference. They will spike your blood sugar. Sugar alcohols are bad news in so many ways.
You can't eat as "much as you want" of any food. While there is a metabolic advantage to Atkins, you are still to eat only until satisfied, not stuffed. You are supposed to be eating quality food (whole foods: meats, poultry, fish, cheese, fats, veggies and the like) and breaking sugar/carb addictions. There is a limit of three servings of artificial sweeteners a day. That alone puts the skids on eating as much as you want of any kind of candy.People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Re: Russell Stover's Toffee Squares
This is why the answer to your question is no.
Russell Stover's famous sugar free assorted chocolates are a true treat for anyone seeking GREAT sugar free candy. Crunchy toffee covered in a milk chocolatey coating.
INGREDIENTS CONSIST OF MALTITOL SYRUP, CHOCOLATE CANDY {MALTITOL, COCOA BUTTER, CHOCOLATE, ISOMALT, SODIUM CASEINATE (MILK), MILK FAT, INULIN, ERYTHRITOL, CALCIUM CARBONATE, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, SOY LECITHIN/AN EMULSIFIER, SALT, ACESULFAME POTASSIUM, AND SUCRALOSE}, BUTTER, ALMONDS, SOY LECITHIN/AN EMULSIFIER, SALT, FD & C COLORS (YELLOW#5 &6, RED #40, BLUE #1), MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES WITH CITRIC ACID TO HELP PROTECT FLAVOR, TOCOHEROLS (A NATURAL ANTIOXIDENT), NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, AND SUCRALOSE.
Maltitol crystals and/or syrup is one of the most commonly used sugar alcohols -- think Russel Stover chocolates. So they DO have a "significant" effect on blood sugars. Almost as much as regular table sugar. While erythritol and mannitol have NO EFFECT. And the others have "minimal" effect. So make sure you are checking the labels of the products that you buy and use, and especially steer clear of Maltitol, because not all sugar alcohols are the same.People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Re: Russell Stover's Toffee Squares
Ditto what Sherri and Sunny said.
As to total vs. net carbs, you should count net carbs on Atkins. So if you are eating a cup of broccoli for example, you count it as 3.5 carbs, not 5.8."Get action. Seize the moment. Man was never intended to become an oyster."

Re: Russell Stover's Toffee Squares
You'll be better off in the long-run finding Atkins-friendly treats that you make yourself. They'll have more nutrients and won't kill your digestive system. Plus, a lot of the sugar-free candy is a lot of money per piece - a waste of money in my opinion.
Check out Linda's Low Carb Recipes for some Induction-friendly recipes (the ones marked with an *).

Re: Russell Stover's Toffee Squares
Why would you want to eat this anyway ?
SODIUM CASEINATE
INULIN
ERYTHRITOL
ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS
EMULSIFIER's
FD & C COLORS (YELLOW#5 &6, RED #40, BLUE #1),
MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES
I am no food expert, well, looking at me you might think I am
But I would not like all that in me.

I learned this the hard way last Sunday when I cheated with
chinese food and all the sugar in the General Tso's chicken
sauce has the same effect.
