That's right, I figured out how to make real gummi bears... and best of all, it's cheap, quick and easy!
INGREDIENTS:
7 packets of unflavored gelatin
6 packets of splenda
3/4 packet of unsweetened kool-aid flavor of your choice
1/2 cup water
You also would do well with:
3-4 plastic candy molds
Squeeze bottle with thin nozzle
Both of which can be found in craft stores.
Combine all of the dry ingredients into a small saucepan and stir in the water. Keep stirring making sure to get as much of the gelatin soaked as possible. It will end up being sort of a crumbly paste. Put this saucepan on a LOW flame (you might scorch the splenda otherwise and that is NOT pleasant) and stir continuously until the mixture is almost entirely liquified. You might never get all of it to liquify... I usually have one or two tiny chunks left which won't budge. Also, I find that an icing spatula is the best thing to stir with.
Take off the heat. Pour this liquified mixture into the squeeze bottle and squeeze it into the candy mold shapes. Do this quickly because it starts to set almost immediately. If the nozzle gets gummed up, take it off and run it under extremely hot water for a few seconds.
Put the molds in the freezer for about 10 minutes to cool and you're done! Perfect gummy bears! You might want to experiment with adding more kool-aid or sweetener but this is the level my wife and I found acceptible. Best of all, one batch of gummies costs about $3 and can last for days.
One last tip: Remember fruit roll-ups? Well squirt the liquid onto a flat plate or baking pan and freeze it to create your own.
Also, clean-up is a breeze since the gelatin will dissolve in hot water!
