      Re: Dishwashers vs. Hand Washing

The dishwasher definitely saves time here. It takes me 20 minutes if not more to wash a big sink full of dishes, and I am sure it takes me less than 5 to load, 5 to unload. I do rinse things that seem to particularly need it as I load (try to load as I go so dishes never SIT in the sink - I hate that because it looks messy and cluttered to me). It also saves water, depending on the techniques you use for handwashing. Ours does a perfectly fine job, but I am extremely picky about how it gets loaded so things are not laying over the top of each other, etc. It is not uncommon for me to slightly "rearrange" my dishwasher on the rare occasion someone else loads it, LOL! I can't stand the thought of something only getting half clean.

I was without a dishwasher for many years (was living in a 70 year old house, really nowhere convenient in the kitchen to install one), and every single day I had to wash dishes once if not twice due to most every meal being home cooked (same deal, the non-cook did the dishes, which I think is perfectly fair so I didn't complain - much, LOL!). I am sure I gave up 30 to 45 minutes of what little free time I had daily to standing over the sink scrubbing. And the bad part was, it couldn't really be done at the same time the cooking was going on, so that took away "couple time" we could have been spending together. So I appreciate the dishwasher greatly.

I do handwash a few awkward pots and pans or more delicate type items and don't mind that little bit of handwashing at all.

Our dishwasher has a heater to crank up the temp on washing which I like the thought of, and I think in general does just as good a job as I might.

dishwasher. but i rinse things first and if i come across something that i know is going to be tough, i soak it for a few minutes. my case iron skilliets are done by hand and any big pots or pans are also done by hand.
my hands get very dried out especially in the winter time so putting things in the dishwasher helps.

I do the pots and pans that fit in the dishwasher. I'd rather wash dishes by hand than pots!!

100+ inches of snow in Wisconsin in 2008 - love it!

When we moved into our current house, it did have a dishwasher. We used it for snacks, easy for the kids and had the sliding trays - it was perfect...and rather amusing to our friends and family.

                Re: Dishwashers vs. Hand Washing

I use to handwash, then was gifted with a dishwasher. I still handwash and rinse everything before putting it in the dishwasher. My sister just throws really dirty stuff in it, some comes clean, some doesn't. It really drives me nuts when she does this! I like never having a dirty drying rack or having to wash those too. But other than that, and having more sterile dishes, I don't see the point. Luckily its a really quiet one. I hate noisy ones. I feel like to be sure its gonna get clean, you gotta wash it yourself anyway.

My starting weight was 235 lbs and I'm trying to get to 130 lbs.

                1st mini goal: 145! met 12/09
                2nd mini goal: 140!
                3rd mini goal:135!
                4th mini goal: 130!

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.

Dishwasher ~ I do not trust that the germs are neutralized unless the water is really HOT. Really REALLY HOT.

Pete, please come shovel my driveway. Snow is expected this time next month. I will make cream cheese muffins and oopsies to pay you.

Mud season comes between winter and spring here. With all the snow melting everything turns to mud, especially our unpaved roads and driveways (which we have quite a few of).

My Mom never had a dishwasher so mentally I'm just not programmed to using it---usually it's a glorified dishdrain, keeping hand washed dishes out of sight as they dry - i hate having a dishdrain on the countertop.

HOWEVER when we have a crowd of guests i try to remind myself to use the dishwasher - we have a european, metal interior dishwasher which heats its own water which is much better than what we had in the States. This way i can use china for guests instead of disposables and not spend all that time washing dishes. I also rinse the dishes beforre loading up the dishwasher.

I'm in with the dishwasher crowd. Mine has a sani-rinse cycle that virtually steam cleans everything. One thing I have noticed that affects the quality of the wash is the detergent. When I first got mine, I tried many brands and finally found one that never leaves last night's dinner on the utensils!
