  • BE CAREFUL: Ketchup

I was going to write a post earlier yesterday about who in the world was going around to my local supermarkets and buying up all the Heintz low carb ketchup. It was not until my third store that I finally located some, and in my relative glee (it is my favourite condiment of choice) picked up two bottles to put on my pantry shelf.

I was later revising that post in my head this morning when, after measuring out the requisit portion with my morning sausage, it tasted strange and gross, sort of sweet but not really, just generally something wrong. But I had a lot to do today, so I sort of kept on about my business and forgot about it.

It was not until lunch when it accompanied a hamburger (generally I don't eat this much ketchup, but it's been a very meat centric day) when I was absolutely overwhelmed by the grossness and went to see if they had changed the recipe on me.

Well, much to my chagrin I'd purchased the LOW SALT Ketchup which, I swear was in the EXACT SAME little bottle with a green label. It'd only been a few days since I'd ran out of the old stuff--how could I have possibly mistaken the bottles?? I swear in my mind's eye they are identical.

Either way, to my horror, instead of my 2 carb addition I have consumed at least **10** of this disgusting ketchup today and I'm really upset about it. I feel awful too--I think all the regular sugar has really sickened my stomach and made me sort of naseous.

Anyway, hopefully this can serve as a warning to those picking it up...keep your eyes open!

I have seen that bottle side by side at my local grocery store and it is easy to grab the wrong one.

I keep the lc version on hand. I mix it with a bit of mustard for my hamburgers. Hubby laughs at me but it reminds me of McDonalds hamburgers when I use it.

EEEK! They really should have more different labels.

I noticed that too. The label is also similar to the "organic" version of the ketchup.

Oops, I have just about taken the Organic one before -- doesn't it just burn you up when mistakes like that happen. I am inevitably paying for them the next morning on the scale or night on the treadmill trying to burn through a mistake on someone's part - like a supposed low carb sauce that wasn't.

              Re: BE CAREFUL: Ketchup

With all the time and effort Heinz puts into their cute regular ketchup labels, you would think they could come up with 3 completely different looking labels for their low-carb, salt-free and organic ketchups!!

I love to use the low-carb ketchup mixed with a little horseradish (NOT the stuff from the mayo shelf mixed into the cream, but the stuff they keep in the dairy case) and lemon juice. That way I can have shrimp cocktail without sending myself into a diabetic coma from the HFCS in commercially-prepared cocktail sauce! Yummy!

                  Re: BE CAREFUL: Ketchup

I have grabbed the low carb bottle when shopping for a neighbor who is low salt so I can understand how easy this is to do. Glad you measured your ketchup so you limitied the damage to just 2 actual servings.
