  • BBQ Sauces - One Thumbs Up and One Thumbs Down

First the good one -- Kraft Carb Well BBQ sauce. It actually tastes like BBQ should, and has 3 carbs per 2 TBS serving. (I only ever use 1 TBS) It's a little high in carbs, but it is a treat item. I highly recommend this sauce and it is available seemingly everywhere.

The bad one has to be Walden Foods BBQ. It has 0 carbs and 0 fat and 0 calories. I bought it from GNC on a whim, and boy was it a mistake. It's horrible! I couldn't even choke the nasty stuff down. They should give it to Fear Factor contestants.

I tried the Atkins bbq sauce I really didnt care for it...it almost tasted like a sour teriyaki sauce not really bad but not like a true bbq flavor. I have to agree the kraft is really good.

I tried the carb options hickory flavored on some ribs on the 4th. It was edible. I can't get too excited though I'm from the deep South where I'm used to the good stuff.

I've sworn off of most bbq sauces now that I have ready access to a smoker. A good dry-rub and hours in the smoke of hickory or mesquite tends to eliminate the need for the sauce.

Also, if you are into pulled pork it can be very good with an eastern Carolina style vinegar and hot pepper sauce.

I just tried the Atkins. It is not a true BBQ sauce taste (yep, in Kentucky we got a fixin' for BBQ!), it was a bit spicy for my usual taste. But it wasn't that bad.

I would give Atkins an 8 out of 10.

I agree that the Carb Options Hickory definitely is the best of the low carb fare. I eat it as a treat on either Country Style or Baby Back Ribs. I usually just use a dry rub, but it's nice to have a sauce option occasionally.

I have sampled the Walden Foods Hot n Spicy BBQ sauce, and while not as good as Carb Options or Kraft IMO, it is a LOT better than their horrid regular. What can I say BBQ sauce goes well on everything. Most of the dry rubs I used to use were 75% brown sugar (81:1 recipe), so they are now in the past...

A friend introduced me to a decent trick for cutting the carbs for BBQ sauces used for dipping - mix it with mayo.

I have tried the Atkins sauce and thought it had a very strange taste to it. May try the Carb Options or Kraft when I get back to the US. By the way, Scott, I noticed you are from Morristown. I grew up about 15 minutes from there. :wave
