I brought an Almond Brownie Bar( Atkins Advantage) and on the front of the package it says 2gs. On the back it says- total carbs 22g, dietary fiber 7g, sugar 0g, sugar alcohol 0g, and protein 20g. Can someone explain to me how they got 2 carbs out of all that information?

Re: Atkin bar...carbs?
they didn't if you read the fine print it should say 2 net effective carbs they subtract out the stuff they add to the bar that in their testing has been low blood sugar impact on their test subjects usually healthy average weight males ( see a problem there?) like hydrogenated starches ( isn't it interesting hydrogenate a fat and they tell you to avoid it cause it is unhealthy but do the same to a starch and poof it is magically a good thing), glycerine, and sugar alcohols things the federal governement said NO you can't count that as fiber since it is infact metabolized by the body.
skip those things and stick to subtracting fiber from your totals for your carb counts and you will be a healthy smaller you.by the book atkinseer

Re: Atkin bar...carbs?
Bummer, in getting set for my induction I bought a bunch of the bars. I trusted the "net carbs" sign on the front and when I got home I read closely & got a different story. I like the bars a lot but they 'mystery' formula has me being cautious. It could entirely wreck induction by trusting what the Atkins producers claim. I don't think they had this mystery formula in effect when Dr. A was still alive....

Re: Atkin bar...carbs?
yep he did he had net carbs total minus fiber and net effective which was tiotal minus fiber and the mystery stuff but there was just sugar alcohols anf glycerine in them back then as those mystery stuff but as they tried to improve the taste to compete with the other company bars more and more mythical counting noncounting hydrogenated starches ans stuff were invented and added.

Re: Atkin bar...carbs?
I aggree in general that sticking to real foods is the way to go. But I have found the Atkins bars to be a real useful tool when I'm hungry and betweeen meals, or as an occasional meal replacement.
I have been wondering about all the "mystery stuff," that they subtract out. However, any other bars that try to say they are low carb tend to put a ton of sugar alcohols in them, which can have a laxitive effect on those sensitive to it. Atkins bars are the only one's I've found that have a significant amount of fiber in them at all.
I also found this article, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...&dopt=Abstract, that shows that the Atkins bars have the least amount of glycemic impact, out of the other bars they tested (Power Bar and Balance bar). This says to me that if you need to have a convenience bar, you might want to stick with Atkins.
Any other thoughts? I'd love to find out what the mystery stuff is, so that I could apply it to other bars if I'm shopping around.6' 2" male
