  • Splenda - Effect On A Hypoglycaemic

    Hypoglycaemics beware!

I've never tried Splenda before, but I picked up a few sachets when I stayed in a hotel recently. I assumed it was like saccharin or Aspartame. Not so!

In an atempt to wean myself off Cadbury's Highlights (a hot chocolate mix, 5 carbs a mug, aspartame) I tried a suggestion made on this board: heavy cream mixed with a sachet of Splenda and a little chocolate flavouring.

Result: tasted OK, but half an hour later had a blood-glucose "crash" that put me into a terrifying seizure: my body went ice-cold, except for my head that was so hot it felt like it would burst, then I went into an uncontrollable fit of trembling, then I felt all scared and panicky, then I fell uncontrollably into a deep sleep (on the couch, at 8pm). Woke up all groggy at 9pm, went to bed, and overslept till 9am, missing my daily swim!

The last time I had a reaction like that was when someone gave me Coke instead of Diet Coke. I don't even react like that to chocolate!

So, no more Splenda for me - it's evil!

Re: Splenda - Effect On A Hypoglycaemic

I don't have any problems with Splenda, but my best friend who is diabetic has a LOT of issues with it. It doesn't affect her nearly as much as it does you Helena, but it gives her GI troubles, and headaches and such.

We had a diabetic member who documented the blood sugar affect on her using her glucometer.

So beware, these sweeteners are a your mileage may vary type of thing.

welcome to the small group of ADBBers who are Splemda challenges individuals. when I talked with Dr Atkins folk before he died about mine they said find another sweetner. Have you tried stevia? if you were using aspartame without issues you might be able to keep using it.

            It's definitely because I am a hypoglycaemic.

Yesterday I had a similar reaction to Diet Coke.

I don't have any Stevia and I don't know where to buy it in the UK and I think I would rather just give up all sweet things forever.

Re: Splenda - Effect On A Hypoglycaemic

it has to do with the cephalic response. the body tasted sweet and reacted accordingly with a release of insulin to the antcipated sugar. when none arrived that insulin goes to work on the blood sugar already there and lowers the blood sugar level below normal and then the hypoglycemic reations occur.until digested foods rep;enish the levels in the body. you can't fix it fast with sugar cause even more insulin would be released making it happen all over again and worse.
