  • Effects on digestion

I've been sampling a variety of low-carb products recently, and the chocolate bars and 'bakery' products all without exception give me a very upset stomach. Has anyone else noticed this?

    stomach upset

Hey Jules. Yes, definitely the chocolate bars will upset your stomach. It's the "sugar alcohol" they use to sweeten the bars. I guess most of what I've seen is called "malitol" but there are several different ones out there. I can't eat but 1/2 bar at a time. That's the downfall of the low carb chocolate. Do a search for "Malitol" and read about it. Digestion problems are a big side effect. They are good, however, so we'll probably keep eating them even if it's little pieces at the time.

I have a funny story about this. I went on vacation 2 weeks ago and just found sugar free Jelly Belly's. I thought I was in heaven. That night while everyone was making smores I scarfed the little bag I bought - about 100 jelly bellys. About 2hrs later - Diarrhea. I had to walk 1/4 mile each way to the bathroom 4 times in the middle of the night.(tent camping). The racoons and I became friends. The next morning I read the bag and it said - Warning - Start by eating only 12 jelly bellys - May cause laxative effect. OOPS!

I'm ok with the sugar-free chocolate--as long as I stick to one serving.

Those sugar free jelly beans though -- watch out!! I ate just one serving of those and I had problems!!

          candy

          Hi,
I was wondering if any one knows of any sugar free candy that doesn't have these problems? I can't eat the malitol but I miss my chocolate!
          Thank you!

            Hershey's Sugar-Free Chocolate

Hershey's just came out with new sugar free chocolate made with lacitol. I haven't had a lot at once (just two small pieces at a time) but its pretty good and hasn't bothered me yet!!

                similar digestive issues

Just so you know....I am a chocoholic. i have tried several SF chocolates with similar results. be careful when you eat more than 1 serving (usually a very small portion) or expect issues. everyone responds differently. i saw the new SF Hershey's chocolates about 3 months ago and had 5 i think. and for :30 mins i was okay. but since i was traveling down a back road highway between two major towns (Fort Worth and Austin, TX) and there were not enough bathroom stops. worst was the gassy bloated feeling or whatever you want to call it. i find that Lactitol (hershey's/reese's sweetener) is worse than Malitol for me. i can eat a Carbolite bar or similar without any problems but 3 Hershey's pieces and i feel kinda gassy. not ill just not good more than that is trouble. but a serving is 3.
