  • Gained weight on the candy bars

I've been on Atkins since May 1, 2008, lost 20 lbs... but just gained 5 back by eating one Atkins small candy bar a day. It claims to have just 2 carbs. I get the carmel nouget one it's 1/2 the size of advantage. It's delicious but I can't afford to gain weight! So what's with that? Is it really just 2 carbs?

I had the same problem with the bars in 2005. When I ate them, the cravings for sweets came back and eventually derailed me so I avoid them now. I just got a coupon for a $1 off on 2 bars but I threw it away! I'm not going back there again!!!!

That almost makes me think the estate of Dr. ATkins is trying to make money at our expense. Are those foods REALLY good for people on this diet?

Oh dear - I just ordered some of the chocolate coconut endulge ones for when I come out of induction. I'd be interested in hearing from others who've tried the 'endulge' line of atkins bars and if their weight loss was affected..

That's what mine are-- they are excellent but maybe I'm sensitive to Alcohol sugars and you won't be... I bought the caramel nut Yummmmmm. But I think Blueberry lady is right even if it doesn't make you gain like it did me, it does give you back that sweet tooth.

I truly envy people who can eat normally and not gain weight. I can't eat half of what my coworkers eat and I have one Atkins bar and gain weight.

I'ld like to know too. I ate only one (TOM crisis) and later was reading the back of the box. It shows Total carbs 14g, dietary fiber 6g, sugars 1g, sugar alcohols 1g. It sounds like they're only counting sugars which isn't how we do it!

It's not the estate of Dr. Atkins that is at fault here. It's Atkins Nutritionals- and they're a whole different beast.

No. They're not "good for you". Just look at the list of ingredients! Can you even pronounce most of them?! They're not just two carbs. Do some reading on sugar alcohols. There's no such thing as mythical, magical carbs that don't count. If I eat something with SAs, I count 50% of them.

Low-carb junk food is still junk food! - I stand by the "general rule of thumb" in my signature. You've seen what happens when you eat them. You tell us. Are they good for you?

General rule of thumb for success: If it requires a degree in chemical engineering to pronounce it, you probably shouldn't eat it.

Many people aren't sensitive to polyols (sugar alcohols). However, a large group are. The ones who are not are the ones whose digestive systems don't absorb the polyol carbs - so they get diarrhea and gas! That's one way of knowing whether you're digesting these polyols or not. I think its key to pay attention to how your body reacts when you eat one of these bars - and see if it affects your weight loss too.

Calorie for calorie most of these are also devoid of good nutrition and should only play a role a very minor role in a healthy low-carb WOE ie an occasional treat, similar to how people on low calorie diets treat regular candy bars. As many people on this board have pointed out, hey shouldn't be something we gorge on!
