  • Dixie USA Carb Counters Devils Food Cake Mix

This cake mix is made from whey protein, low glycemic monosaccharide, dried egg whites, cocoa powder, and a bunch of other stuff. No sugar alcohols. It comes in a unsettling-looking paper bag that seems like it's barely sealed, but there's a sealed foil sack inside. The 4.9 ounce package is used with 2 sticks of butter, 4 eggs, 3 oz. unsweetened chocolate, and water to make a 13"x9"x2" cake. This is 12 servings, each with 5g carbs including 1g fiber, so 4 net carbs per serving.

I'm a decent cook and know my way around the kitchen, but baking is not in my reportoire. It's probably been a decade or more since the last time I made a cake. But I followed the directions, and it came out.

So how was it? Not the greatest devils food cake I've ever had, but not bad. Slightly on the dry side. But you could serve it to your friends, and they wouldn't know it was low carb.

It's pricey: $8.99 for the 1 bag of mix. I found it locally (they're TX based), but they also sell from their web site:
