  • Best UK sausage

I am posting to tell anyone in the UK if they have not already found this sausage it really is worth eating.

Original Smoked Pork Sausage | Mattessons

This sausage is a frankfurter style sausage but it is really low carbs, only 0.5g per 100g.

I buy it in Tesco's for £1.37 but there is a discount on at the moment and they are available for £1 each.

The only negative thing about it is that it is preserved with Sodium Nitrite, which Atkins frowns upon. I'd say for the taste and convenience though it is worth while to be eaten on occasion.

I eat mine with my salad as it is already cooked and all I need to do is slice it up. It does have good long dates on it too!

    EDIT

Oh I also found this one at Waitrose - a proper sausage (ie not frankfurter style) but it's not as nice as the one above IMO.

"10 English Pork Chipolatas Herb Waitrose 400g". Ocado's website have a deal on at the moment. Offer - Buy any 2 Waitrose Sausage for £4.50
    Ingredients

Pork Shoulder (61%), Pork Belly (27%), Pastuerised Free Range Egg, Onion, Sea Salt, Rosemary (0.3%), Thyme (0.2%), Black Pepper, Preservative Sodium Metabisulphite, Parsley.
    Filled into natural sheep casings.
Product as sold contains pork 88%.

Thanx for this. I've been looking for a while. I have Bockwurst sausages(German Pork sausages) but they don't look too appetizing!

I have not come across any sugar free marinades but I would think that spices would go quite well on meat on the BBQ. You could try 5 spice (make sure no added sugar on list of ingrediants - of course) and some soy sauce (choose low sodium version as it has less carbs and helps prevent water retention ;-) ). I like that done on the hob anyway!

Hi Justabittoloose, I tried the Mattesssons Smoked sausage, sorry but it was vile! I managed one bite and gave it to my son-in-law.
Have been lucky and found that some cocktail sausages are low in carbs, the ready cooked ones.Lidls are quite high but look about, you should find some.
Im quite pleased ive lost 11 pounds in five weeks.I have thyroid problems and find it difficult to loose.

                Re: Best UK sausage

I get gluten free sausages from a local butcher. We used to go to this Irish cafe to eat and our son is allergic to so many things so we always order chips for him. But my hubby asked what was in their sausages and apparently it was just pork. So he ate sausages there for a while.

Out of curiousity we asked where they got their sausages and it turned out it was at a local butchers. So since its good for Atkins too we go there. It is a little inconvenient because of their opening times etc but if we're ever in town we buy or order some more. I expect a lot of butches would make a particular type of sausage if asked. BTW I tried them and they were the best sausages I've ever tasted, I could eat 2 and feel satisfied whereas the shop bought ones filled with rusk and other stuff - I could eat a tonne of them and still feel hungry.
