  • Flax meal and Protein Powder Question

Flax seed meal is $21.00 a lb. at our local health food store---a bit outragious??? Someone mentioned getting it in the grocery store--but where? I would assume the baking aisle by the flour?

Also, when they state protein powder in a recipe--are you talking about the type you mix with water or juice and drink??? Does it matter if it is soy protein?

Hopefully someone can help me. I want to make 2Big's muffins!

    Muffins

Hi Tanzonite50! My first batch of muffins is in the oven as we speak (or write). I am in Arizona and went to a Hi-Health store. The Protein powder I bought is called Designer Protein Whey and it says it is good for drinks, muffins, etc. I bought 12.7 oz. for $7.99 on sale from $17.99. I bought
1 lb. of flaxseed meal for $2.50. It sure smells good in here!

Glad you are making some muffins Gina.

The flax meal seeds can be found in the grocery stroe in the special flour sections and in the healthfood areas. Bob's Red Mill is a national orgain flax seed meal producer and Hognesens Mill is a national producer too. Ask the store where they keep it.

When you buy your protein powder (don't buy soy unless you love the taste of soy) make sure you get the low carb version. Designer Whey is a great one. GNS makes Mega Whey which cooks well too. Know that whey will be drier then soy and adjust your recipes with a moisture holding ingredient like the flax or fat. If you know you are only going to us it for muffins pick the flavor of muffins you want and save the carbs of adding flavor to your batter. If you do a lot of baking buy a plain one for savory baking Garlic flax muffins are awesome, and vanillia for sweet cooking. Since you will be using it by the cup don't worry about who has the most servings in the jar get the most volume for the $ to save. Joining the GNC goldcard plan just to shop for that stuff during the first week of the month has really saved me money. you can also find it at the grocery store.

Okay, I'm good to go! Went to a place here called The Vitamin Outlet. They carry tons of low carb brand foods. Got myself 2# of the flax meal and the Designer Whey--can't wait for Saturday morning to make the muffins! Just a note--if you have a vitamin outlet by you, they will let you trade in your GNC Gold Card for one of theirs at no cost (a $10 value) and they give a 20% discount every day! Plus their prices are way more reasonable than GNC! I was thrilled to find this out. I gave them my "wallet" GNC card and kept my key tag--just in case.

I'm almost tempted to make those muffins tonight . . . but I'm way too pooped. Hmmm. . . maybe tomorrow!

          Keep on keepin' on!

            wow gina you look great.
What flavor did you get? Remember I don't use sweetener so you may want to add some. Th original recipe I adapted to make them low carb called for 1/4 cup sweetener.

Anything you can get at a GNC you can get elsewhere cheaper. If you have a Trader Joes near by they have lots of Atkins friendly stuff that is really inexpensive. Local supermarkets and health food stores and Walmart type places have vitamins and other Atkins must haves. Personally I wouldn't give a dime to GNC. It blows my mind how much more expensive they are than other places carrying the same products.
