  • Jicama?

What exactly is jicama? I have never heard of it. I am assuming it is a vegatable. So where in the super market would I find it? What does it look like? I need to add some variety. Also how do you prepare it? Anything it tastes similar to?
    Thanks,
    Cari

It looks like a big misshapen potato. It is usually located near the potatoes and onions. It tastes like a mix between potato and apple (to me anyway). For preperation, there are tons of things you can do (like Naja linked to), just don't try soaking slices of it in vinegar, covering them in salt, and laying them on a tray in the oven in hopes of getting salt and vinegar potato chips.... blech, one of my more spectacular 'the whole apartment smells of something icky' failures .

It's a very crisp root veggie. It looks brown on the ouside a flat round kind of thing. Peel it and just taste. NulloModo's taste comparison is good. I think it tastes lake a sweet water chestnut. Use in salads or as a scooper for dips. It's wonderful stuff.
