  • Hot dog recipes?

    Hi all,

I picked up a package of Hebrew National hot dogs today (1 carb per hot dog, no sugar), and I know all the usual ways of cooking hot dogs, but without that bun it seems they'd be pretty plain. I just wondered if anyone has come up with any good hot dog recipes other than steam, grill, fry, and serve with mustard...

    Appreciate any recipes you have!

I like to slice mine about half way through and stick some cheese in them. Then cook them.

      I know im a little late =P
Im not sure what phase your in but here are a few ideas.

*A friend of mine used to slice them and cook them in bbq sauce in the slow cooker. Heres a change from bottled sauce if you like current jam.
Barbecue Hot Dogs (found online, don't know much about currant or carb count)

      1 package hot dogs
      1 sm. jar currant jelly
      3/4 c. mustard

Cut hot dogs into bite size pieces. Put in crock pot. Put jelly and mustard in and mix well. Cook, stirring occasionally until sauce is cooked into hot dogs.

*Maybe a low carb bean and franks for something like bake beans and dogs?

      * pigs in a blanket using a low carb bread

*Chili dogs: Low carb wrap/tortilla on grill, add dog in center, few slices of cooked bacon, chili, top with cheese and roll up like a burrito making sure to fold in the ends. Grill it so brown and crisp on all sides.

      * pizza dogs: Sliced dogs topped with sauce and mozzarella cheese.

      * Low carb dog meal (found online, not tested)
1 package of weiners-chopped (Purchase the lowest carb weiners you can find.)
      2 pounds hamburger
1 32 oz jar of ragu old world style spaghetti sauce with mushrooms
      Chili powder

Brown hamburger and drain grease. Add spaghetti sauce and weiners and heat. Add chili powder to taste. This will take a lot of chili powder. Keep tasting and adding more.

      * Joanie's Coney Island Hot Dog Sauce (found online, not tested)
      2 tablespoons butter
      1 pound lean ground beef
      1 onion, chopped
      1/2 teaspoon salt
      1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
      1 tablespoon paprika
      2 tablespoons chili powder

In large skillet melt butter over medium-high heat. Cook ground beef in butter until brown, 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in chopped onion and cook until beef juices run clear, 3 to 5 minutes. Drain. Stir in salt, pepper, paprika and chile powder. Add water to cover, and simmer until water is absorbed, stirring frequently, 10 to 15 minutes.

My favorites as a kid were always scalloped potatos and sliced dogs . Wonder if you can substitute with turnips/cauliflower for a hog dog chowder. Of course sliced in half and fried in skillet and corn dogs. Sure you can come up with a low carb batter for those too. Hope this gives you some ideas

Currants are a type of berry, and the jam or jelly is made with sugar. So that would be a no.

In general hot dogs aren't great Atkins fare as they are highly processed and contain things like food starch and sometimes sugars. But if you must eat them, try them with a no-bean Tex-Mex chili with ground meat, tomatoes, chiles and onions.

I cut up a couple of hot dogs and add a cup or two of sauerkraut and a few extra caraway seeds, heat and eat. Fast and easy and makes a great lunch. Yum!

Sashie: Thanks for all the recipes -- unfortunately, the low carb bread, tortillas, jam, etc., are all no-no's for me right now. Someday...

Naja - I buy the Hebrew National or Boar's Head hot dogs - no fillers, no sugars, just 100% beef. Actually, after I bought them the first time (the original post was quite awhile ago), I've not bought them again -- it was too frustrating not to have any creative ways to cook them! LOL But thanks for keeping us on the straight and narrow

              With sauerkraut.

Or this is something I used to do when I was in college. Thinly slice the hot dog into rounds. Fry them with some onion until they are alittle golden. Beat an egg or two and pour it over the hotdog and onion. Cook like you would an omelette.
