  • Need Something SPICY!

In my former life of eating carbs, my all time favourite food was a Buffalo Chicken salad with spicy Mexi-Ranch dressing from a chili place called Hard Times (those in the DC metro area may know what I'm talking about!). However, since I can't get my salad fix every couple weeks like I used to, I am craving that spicy/mexican food burn and I'm not quite sure where or how to get it.

Can anyone recommend their favourite spicy food recipes? I'm on "permanent induction" so nothing too ambitious!

I'm in the southern Maryland area.

Anyhow, Buffalo wings are legal on Atkins depending on how you cook them. Buy those plain frozen wings in a bag, and cook them according to the bag's instructions. Read the bag though, because one brand injects their wings with a sugar solution.

You can use any kind of hot sauce for your Buffalo sauce. I use Frank's because it has the sauce recipe on the bottle, but I add a minced clove of garlic and a teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes to the sauce for extra flavor.

You can use the Buffalo sauce on grilled chicken breast slices or as a meatball sauce.

Two of my favorite hot sauces is Srichacha sauce and the Srichacha sambal paste. These are southeast Asian style chili sauces/chili pastes. They are very spicy, but have a nice pepper flavor too. You can find them at Giant, Shoppers or Safeway in the international foods section. Actually it's less expensive to buy them there than if you were to go to the Asian markets or the specialty foods places. I find that a teaspoon of the sambal gives foods like guacamole or even mayonnaise a really nice kick.

I love spicy food too! I like making taco salads with La Victoria Salsa Brava hot sauce (it's thicker than regular hot sauce but only has a carb or two in it) and various spices - I've found that cumin is what gives it that classic packaged taco mix flavor without all the fillers. I usually add a few more dashes of another hot sauce (my favorite is Chilula) to make it really spicy. Just top some lettuce with the beef/chicken taco mix, add a little sour cream and avocado and it's delish.

          Re: Need Something SPICY!

I understand the need for a hot fix. My household (just me and Hubby) buys Frank's Red Hot by the quart literally.

I make a Buffulo Chicken Salad often. I pan fry boneless skinless chicken breast and basicly dip the whole thing in hot sauce before placing it on a bed of salad. I have Chunky Bleu Cheese dressing with it. It's the FIRE! I have also done the same thing with leftover pork loin. Frank's label reads no carbs, no sugar. So it's one Condiment that I haven't given up. ( I am the Condiment Queen)

I have eaten at a Hard Times and they are very excellent, you are right. My sister still lives in Fredericksburg, Va (where I grew up) and it's one of her favorite spots.

Good luck on your quest for a high heat/low-carb dish! And please share what you come up with!
