  • Things for the Oven Deprived?

I love my dorm. Sure it's got roaches in the rooms, heaters/ACs that haven't worked since 1963, and unspeakable horrors in the bathrooms...but it's close to work and school, not to mention wallet friendly.

Sadly, there's no oven. Just a joke of a poor thing in the corner of the old...well, it's a old room that people tell scary stories about. I made muffins in it once and afterward vowed never to touch the thing again. So I have a mini fridge and a microwave in my room, and it's too much to eat out everyday.

I've made the danish and that was great, but is there any other meals I can make using my microwave? Small chance but I thought it couldn't hurt to ask. I'm also trying to find out what to get for my mid-month grocery run.

I am sure you will get lots of great ideas, but how about buying a small crock pot. You can get them for under $20. and make lots of great stuff in it.

I'm not sure how to use one. I think I saw one at Linens 'n Things, but it just looked like you could make stew and dips.

Check out the Main Dish Forum: there are many recipes there that can be adapted for the microwave.

By the way, did you know shellfish like shrimps, clams, lobsters, crabs and mussels can be cooked in the microwave? http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...DGJU3QL1P1.DTL

My DF is just wrapping up some special schooling in which he experienced living Atkins with just a microwave and fridge. He made scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage in the microwave and created a LOT of wraps with lettuce leaves, deli meat, cheese, veggies, etc. There are also salads, and things like salmon salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, etc. etc. One can also get a roasted chicken from the deli section of the grocery store and eat that for several days...

Hot dogs, bacon, and frozen vegetables are biggies; as well as pepperoni crisps (I'll amend this list as soon as I go out to the kitchen!). Get a George Foreman Grill, it's the key to life, easy to operate, and will open up a whole new world of food options.

Re: Things for the Oven Deprived?

I am not oven deprived, but I am super cheap, and don't like to pay for the electric to use my huge old monstrosity.

I bought a toaster over/broiler at Wal Mart for 30.00. It is small, but will cook a chicken, small roast, hold a six pan of muffins, etc etc etc. And it uses way less electricity than a normal sized one.

I would consider it. I love mine. For twenty more, I could have gotten one that had a rotisserie in it, too... but, as I said, cheap.

Re: Things for the Oven Deprived?

I agree with the George Foreman grill suggestion. You can get a personal size one that will comfortably fit, say, a T-Bone steak for like $20-$25 at Wal-Mart. Or a bigger model for a little more. Great investment! I am a police officer, mostly working night shift, and I keep one at work. They guys all get hungry and have to suffer with fast food crap while I chow down on the good stuff! Oh they love to hate the smells of my grilling!

The grill sounds pretty nice, especially for bacon and beef. What are pepperoni crisps?

I often make roast chicken in my crockpot. not to mention roast beef, pork ribs, soups, etc etc. I love mine. I definitly suggest a crockpot. also second the suggestion of a toaster oven. I REFUSE to turn on my oven once the temps hit 65. I hate a hot house and refuse to turn it on all summer long. my toaster oven does great for roast veggies in the summer. everythign else gets cooked on a grill outside or on the stove

Yea, you will love the small George Foreman if you get one! You can do chops, steaks, fish, bacon, sausage, grilled veggies, hotdogs, hamburgers pretty much anything you like! I love mine! I also love my slow cooker and my toaster oven, both of which were under 20 bucks at Walmart!

Watch for the sales and you'd be surprised how cheap they go for!

We lived w/o and oven or stove for about 5-6 months when we moved into the house we're in now with those appliances and a Coleman camping stove I had no problem fixing anything our little hearts desired!
