  • flax seed vs. flaxmeal

I am confused, what is the difference between the 2? i made a quiche pizza and a broccoli/chicken casserole and sprinled about 1/4c flaxseeds and cooked---should i have used the flaxmeal? Providing seed works, any ideas on how much to use in a casserole ?

I think the meal is just ground up flax seed

Flax seed is not generally processed by the human digestive tract unless it is first ground into flax meal. It is harmless to eat flax seed, but it will mostly "pass on through". Flax meal is made from ground up flax seeds and can be digested by humans.

so are you saying that eating the flax seed does nothing to help with fiber/constipation? i was told to sprinkle the seed on salad for additional fiber-- right/wrong?

Just a tip from an expensive lesson learned. When people here say meal they mean ground up flax seed. However, the GNC sells a Super Flax Meal, it is not the meal of which they speak. I brought it sprinkled it on a salad thinking i'd join the club and YUCK! I thought these people must be nuts. Wasn't till someone else recently posted about meal vs. seed that someone explained Super Flax Meal has a load of other components. It is pretty darn expensive too, thus 21 bucks of yuck sits in my fridge.

the outer shell of flax is quite tough. As mentioned, it will just pass through. Get a cheap coffee grinder, about 12 bucks at WalMart, and just pulse it a bit... grind it very coarse for your salad. That way you will get the nutty tiny crunch and the benefits.

Sorry 'bout the yuck in your fridge, Brats, maybe you will be able to use yours down the road?

actually, i just went and checked and found that i have been using fipro flax which is milled flax seed! like the taste-- get it at health store-- about $7 for nice size bag.

given that, whew, how much do you think i should put in casserole?

What reason are you adding it fiber, for omega3s, as a thickener, as an egg sub, as an oil sub, or as a flour for backing a crust?

the amount will be different for each reason
