  • Savory Oatmeal?

I know people love to add sugar, milk, cinnamon, vanilla, etc. How about savory? Oatmeal isn't sweet to begin with so I don't see why it couldn't work.

As weird as it sounds; I think some soft zucchini or something similar mixed in with some spices could be good.

Has anyone ever added anything else to their oatmeal?

    Thanks.

    Re: Savory Oatmeal?

I eat oat groats or steel-cut oatmeal, rather than the rolled stuff. I mix strong flavored cheese into it, like cheddar or parmesan, as have it as a side dish----very yummy, especially if you top the portion with some crumbled bacon or bits of fried sausage. But I haven't mixed in onions or anything like that....

However, I can see this would work if it was made like a pilaf or a risotto type thing. I might have to experiment on this.

I don't see why not. When I was a kid, we used to eat cream of wheat with butter and parmesean cheese with my grandpa (he's italian and he put butter and parmesean cheese on EVERYTHING) People always give me a weird look when I tell them that.

For some reason I never even thought of cheese! I'll have to try that. I'm going to be trying lots of new stuff, I'm sure.

        Yay.

In the American south, there's a dish called cheese grits. It's grits with cheese and served as a side dish. Grits and gravy is another dish.

So oatmeal or porridges made from grains can be flavored with savory ingredients for side dishes.

The cheese oatmeal goes well with those stewed or braised meat dishes.

In Scotland they eat hot salted porridge with a "bowlie" of cold double cream. It's awesome!

I tried it with cheese and, to put it simply, it was not good. Is there a certain way to prepare it or just prepare as normal and stir in some cheese?

                Any other ideas?

What kind of oatmeal are you using? Is it the rolled oats stuff? If so, I would imagine that would be rather....Blech!

I typically use the steel-cut or whole oat groats. They have a nuttier taste and a better texture (bite-able), than the rolled stuff.

Yep, just the regular ol' rolled oats! Reckon I could use Cream of Wheat? Is that even acceptable? We have some but I haven't had a look at it in years!
