  • Crispy nibbly things

Sometimes I get a terrible attack of The Crispy Nibbles. At present the only thing I can buy locally is pork rinds. They almost break my teeth, and I get bored with them.

I know about microwaving salami but find the crisps too salty like that.

    I know about microwaving cheese.

Any other ideas please ladies and gents?

veggies. My fav is to buy fresh snap beans (green beans?) and cook them in the mircowave until they are barely cooked and still very crunchy. Then i keep them in the fridge. My kids love them too. During homework, I plop a bag on the table with the kids and they yell, "Cold beans!" and dig in. They are just so sweet!!!! (the beans as well as the kids, haha)

Veggies: raw or fried. If you check the Lessons Forum, there is a Cooking Lessons subforum. There is a thread there about Induction friendly vegetable chips/crisps.

If you like pork rinds, but want something a little softer, try pork cracklins (in refrigerated meat display of most major grocery stores) - put handful on paper (to soak up the extra oil) and microwave. They get crispy very quick, and are like a cross between pork rinds and bacon. You can cook bacon this way, too.

Pork cracklins? What is that? Never seen that in any UK supermarket. Do you just mean fresh raw pork skin, then cook it at home?

Basically, yes, but not with the skin still attached. "Fat back" cut into small pieces but not yet cooked is sometimes labeled as cracklings in the meat dept., though generally the term refers to the already cooked snack. I like all these similar things fried crispy: bacon, porkskins, pork rinds, fatback (after frying or nuking), cracklins (AKA Chitterlings, cracklings) and Chicharrón. And oh, yes, washpot style pork skins, right outta da kettle!

If you grate cheddar cheese over a portion of pork rinds, cover with a bit of kitchen paper and microwave for about 30 seconds they go a bit softer and are quite a tasty little snack.

mmmmm...yes, I've done that Rich. You could possibly add a titch of salsa too, couldn't you? Make it kind of like nachos? I'm talking like a tablespoon or less dribbled over the top.

I don't know if you have the option of different brands of pork rinds, but I know that here in the U.S. some brands are a LOT harder than others. Some are super salty as well. Pork rinds should really be about as hard as styrofoam, no harder.

Chitterlings are fried pork intestines. I little bit different than pork skins!

Rich - do you mean the type of rinds that come in foil packets? I don't find them too hard. It's the fresh ones from the Scoop and Save Shop that are rock hard. Are those the ones to micro?

Anyway, I have found the PERFECT crispy nibbly thing and for only hlaf a carb.

Lidl Emmental Cheese slices! Microwave on a piece of greaseproof paper for about a minute or two, keep checking, your micro's mileage may vary! until all puffed up all over. Very light and very crispy. Tastes a bit like cheese straws, a bit like Quavers.
