  • Cocktails / nice alcoholic drinks

Sorry to sound like a giant lush, but I was wondering what Atkins friendly drinks there are? I am getting a bit bored of wine or spirits and sugar-free mixers when I go out.

My favourites are creamy cocktails like White Russian, or Screaming Orgasm but these have sugar in! I also love Bailey but that is also made with sugar.

Any ideas on what might be nice or that I can make at home (occasionally) that is anything like these??

What is your favourite legal drink?

Hi Baarb....great post! Another lush right beside you here! I've been avoiding alcohol cos I have a long way to go, but I really enjoy a cocktail and fully intend to indulge occassionally when I get closer to goal (maybe slightly before for the odd special occasion!)

I have a cocktail book - I'll take a look at it and see if I can come up with something that could be made legal! I'll be back.....

Baarb, do you have access to Torani or DaVinci SF syrups? They make a Kahlua flavor. I've made fake White Russians before with vodka, heavy cream, and SF Kahlua syrup.

You can also make legal margaritas with lime juice (the REAL stuff, not Rose's), orange extract, tequila, and splenda. You could also make daiquiris by leaving out the triple sec and just adding some sweetener and flavor extracts with your fruits and rum.

Ok, Julie I'm now slightly in love with you - there is a UK online shop: http://www.sugarfreemegastore.com/ that sells these davinci syrups. I can't see kahlua but I don't think it's a full list. Thanks for the tip and the other ideas sound fab too.

Suddenly I'm feeling all giddy just reading this post and wishing I was on the beach for our vacation already!

I just saw a Margarita dispenser at Walmart last night for only $48...it's portable and batter operated How cool is that? "Wasted away in Margaritaville..."

Man, I think I just spent my paycheck looking at that website, Baarb!

I have to admit you guys, I've never tried a real Margarita Lol! I don't really like lime - BUT I'm eating loads more things I never used to, so I may well give the legal version a spin.

Apple - I could spend a heap of cash on there too!

ooooh...a Margarita virgin! My fav has always been strawberry marggies...especially when they put real strawberries and whipped cream on top!

It's a good thing they're in the UK instead of the US...LOL...

Julie, is there a recipe that you use or made up to make the white russians? I would love to try that, I had a real white russian over the weekend and now up two pounds from going off course. Would love to find a suitable substitute.

I can't even think of alcohol guys, my fav used to be Brandy Alexander, but with all this water to drink I am sloshing around unmercifully already. I'm expecting to grow fins any day now.

Well, a real White Russian uses vodka, kahlua, and half and half. Simply substitute the SF Kahlua syrup for Kahlua, and substitute heavy cream for half and half.

Re: Cocktails / nice alcoholic drinks

Not a problem. Not everybody is an alcoholic...ermmm I mean AFFICIONADO like me.

Just kidding. I actually have a bartending book that's really great--lots of recipes. A White Russian is one I've been able to adjust for Atkins. A LOT of drinks use really sweet ingredients, like amaretto, or sweet and sour mix, or gomme syrup, or triple sec, and I have NO CLUE how to adjust those! Which is sad, because one of my favorite drinks was an Amaretto Sour...anybody that can LC that drink is a genius.

Though that's not QUITE as sweet as a Brandy Alexander, huh?!

Re: Cocktails / nice alcoholic drinks

I've also found the best drinks (including margarita's) always seem to have some sort of high sugar liquer included in them that seems to give them their taste.

I'm normally not a fruity drink person, but found i do miss having them once in a while. I've played around with some of the Crystal light flavours (as long as the sweetener doesn't bother you) and have managed to come up with some that aren't too bad. They have a strawberry banana and strawberry kiwi one that goes very well with vodka or rum, some ice and some frozen strawberries (OWL) all blended together. You just have to make sure you make the crystal light with less water so your drink isn't too watery due to the ice. Their lemon lime also makes an ok margarita sub with fresh lime juice and tequila, though IMO not really close to the real thing.

The passionfruit pineapple makes a good drink too. I added some coconut milk..wasn't exactly a pina colada, but wasn't a bad summer drink! Maybe cocnut milk and pineapple davinci's would work (if they make one?)

Cocktails are one of the hardest things to low carb i think.
