  • Turnip fries ??

I've seen a couple of posts that mentioned "turnip fries". Do I dare think this is just done by peeling a turnip and cutting it into pieces to fry in olive oil?? If there is more to it, please enlighten me. I like turnip greens and turnip roots so I have high hopes for "frying" turnips if that's all we do to it. Thanks a bunch for any further instruction.

you want to get a cripsier final product you can deep fry them in another oil. If you are content with steak fries then you do as you said. You can oven fry them too. season then when they are done most use a spicey mix. Use young some ones to avoid the bitter taste.

But you gotta REALLY love turnips

I love turnips so I tried these the other night. They were horrible. I would start out with a very small batch just to test out how you like it

In my opinion, turnip fries taste like fried turnips. Not so good. They can be somewhat improved by boiling them in several changes of water before frying, but then you get soggy fries that sometimes fall apart. And they still taste like turnips.

My suggestion is that you make the fauxtatoes and stiffen the mixture considerably with Ketatoes (preferably) or possibly another dry powder like Atkin's bake mix, soy powder (not soy flour) , powdered egg white, etc. Extrude this stiff dough directly into hot oil and fry.

I tried the Jicama fry recipe last night and loved it! The texture is a little different from real potatoes of course, but an excellent substitution I can deinately live with. Even my husband ate them and he is a strict Carnivore. However since he has seen my results on Atkins, and has both parents with terrible illnesses, he is more open minded about the veggies thank God

New to the board but my wife and I have been on atkins/weight watchers since December 2000. We love fried turnips as a potato substitute while we’re on atkins. I slice them rather small and cook them in olive oil until they caramelize quite a bit. I think this improves the flavor. We also use turnips by peeling, cutting into chunks, nuking in the microwave and then adding butter.
