  • Snack Ideas....Help!!

Ok, so I've grabbed a few ideas from Linda's site, I've grabbed a few of ideas from this forum, and I've come up with a few ideas of my own but I am still in need of some simple, low-carb snacks that are ok for Induction for my hunny.

She is a huge snacker and even this diet hasn't changed that. Right now I think its more a habit than anything else but she's not choosing well so I try to have better things in the kitchen for her.

I typically have, induction-friendly of course:

    meatballs
    buffalo wings
    chicken fingers
cheese-stuffed jalapeno peppers wrapped in bacon
    cheese sticks
    sugar-free jello
    boiled eggs
    pork rinds

What I'd REALLY love is something not really frankenfood but something I don't have to do any enormous work for and can keep a good amount of in the kitchen. Something that can be eaten cold. Anything is better than the peanut/flaxseed butter she's scooping into every night. I know, its not on induction, but I'm hitting a brick wall of "well there's nothing else to snack on" and my suggestion of not snacking isn't met well. Oh, and she doesn't do raw veggies.

    Help, help, help!!!

    Re: Snack Ideas....Help!!

How about that pumpkin recipe where you use a half cup of plain canned pumpkin and put a little pumpkin pie spice on it, an ounce or two of cream cheese I think, maybe an egg, a pack of splenda, then micro it for about a minute or so. Lots of variations of this with/without the cream cheese or the egg. I've had it a couple of times and thought it made a nice dessert-type snack.

Also, perhaps even a person who doesn't like raw veggies might like them a little better with some cream cheese and some kind of veggie spice mix (just watch the ingredients in the mix) sprinkled on it. I have had this a few times on slices of green bell pepper, celery, etc. The crunch is satisfying.

Deviled eggs, sweet pickles made with splenda, a mozzerella cheese stick maybe...

Of course, having a piece of leftover meat with some added fat will really kill my interest in snacking because I feel so full afterwards ... at times I have kept extra hamburger patties in the fridge just for this purpose - a quick heat up and a little mayo and mustard on it with a splenda-sweetened bread and butter pickle slice or two and I wasn't interested in anything else, LOL!

Good luck with it. I'll be checking back to see other snack suggestions... I always like adding in something new so I don't get bored. ;-)

PS - if you regularly have even some of the items you listed available, it looks like there is PLENTY to snack on at your casa! I might have to swing by myself, LOL!

How about getting some double cream add some splenda to your liking and half teaspoon of cocoa powder whisk it up and make a creamy chocolatey desert.Cool it more if you like eat it cold.Mind you read the packaging and work out your carb amounts according to the cream and cocoa labels.Warning you make a little tasty and satisfying but if you over-eat you will feel rotten well I dont know about you but i did.And yes its very fulfilling, just give it a try very simple.

Cocoa isn't an Induction food, for what it's worth.

To the OP ... perhaps she needs to work on her "habit"?

Maybe when she wants to snack, you two could go for a walk?

Pork rinds, grated cheese and jalapenos. Tastes even better than nachos!

Cheezits are tasty. The mock danish could be a snack if you cut it in half or quarters. Nice with a cup of decaf tea.

Everyone gave nice snack ideas, but working to break the habit would be a much better thing to do.

                    Re: Snack Ideas....Help!!

I've been trying to work with her on the habit but there are only so many things I can do, only so many times I can remind her before it starts a big fight. I can't MAKE her stop snacking and I remind her constantly that it isn't necessary...if we eat dinner at 7pm and we go to bed at 10pm why do you need a scoop of peanut butter at 9pm?

The more I try to make her see it for a habit the more pissed off she gets at me. I'm not her mother and I'm not her shrink. All I can do is make sure I mention it on occasion and try to have more Induction friendly snacks available. Its up to her to change her habits but I want to help in any way I can. Maybe its enabling, but I'm tired of getting into huge fights when I try to point these things out and I'm tired of seeing her more and more depressed that she is overweight. I'm willing to help in any way I can, and if that means filling my fridge with Atkins-friendly snacks and letting her figure things out on her own then that is what I will do. All I can do is control my own food issues and let her control hers.

Thanks for the snack ideas, keep 'em coming!

                      Re: Snack Ideas....Help!!

Jacqui, when I started Atkins I was in the habit of having six meals a day: 3 main meals and 3 smaller meals (OK, so they were snacks ). What I did when I began Induction was save a little part of my main meal for my snack. By the end of Induction, I wasn't hungry at all at snack times and just ended up having the 3 meals. Although, I sometimes save what would normally be considered dessert after dinner for an evening snack.

You're right in that snacking is often just a habit. Maybe doing something like I mentioned above would work as it would just be spreading out her meals.

                      Other snack ideas:
                      • Deviled eggs (sometimes I put a little curry powder in the yolk stuff for a different flavor)
                      • Slices of cuke or zucchini with cream cheese & chive on them OR some tuna/chicken salad on them

                        Re: Snack Ideas....Help!!

Mizski, I love your idea of tuna/salmon salad on cucumber slices. Maybe that would go with mushrooms too, you know, stuffing them? Or stuff mushrooms with cream cheese mixed with salmon?

My husband is a snacker Jacqui, but I'm not. I'm more apt to drink a hot beverage or even hot water. Being on Atkins, has cut a lot of snacking out for him because he no longer feels like eating anything, except his nightly bowl of All-Bran Buds. I don't say anything because he needs that for his digestive system, and he still loses weight eating it, so....

I usually try to put something to snack on in his lunch, like the celery with salmon cream cheese or 1 oz. of nuts since we're allowed that on owl rung 3, or summer sausage rolled up with cream cheese, or just a cheese stick. Things he can munch on if he's hungry before or after lunch. Our son actually told me to hide the nuts because they are too easy to grab a handful of, so I did. Now he's back at school, I worry about how he'll stay on Atkins. But he does love the food we eat, so that's a great incentive. Anyway, I digress...if you can find them, keep the pork rinds on hand, altho' I'm not a big fan of them, our son loves them, so....

Anyway Jacqui, you stay on track; you make sure you feed yourself well; and when you continually lose, feel better and look better; maybe she will wake up!

                        Keep your chin up Jacqui
