  • Gyros! Please help!

So I really want a gyro, but I have noooo clue on carb count. I would assume the meat, being lamb, is none, but I don't know how they prepare it. Another concern is that sauce- anyone know about that?? It just sounds so good. Thanks

The meat should be fine, but the sauce is yogurt based, so that could be no good.

Tzatziki sauce has about 15 grams of carbs per cup from what I could figure, so if you only eat a tablespoon or two it would be OK for after induction, but it is primarily yogurt based, so none for then.

Tzatziki has about 1g of carbs per tablespoon, primarily from the natural sugars in the yogurt and the garlic.

Gyros are typically served with tomatoes and onions, both of which are higher carb vegetables.

My husband owns a Chicago stye restaurant. The gyro meat is full of carbs. Grecian Delight brand of meat has 2 carbs per ounce of meat. I measured it out and it is a very small amount. Each sandwich is served with approximatly 6-7 oz. So I would stay away from gyros

I just did a little digging on the Grecian Delight web site, as such high carb counts in Gyro meat are hard to believe. According to their site they offer several different types of gyro meat, but all of them other than 'Chicago Style' are listed as being 100% meat with simple added spices. I will inquire further to get exact nutrition info if I can.

I called the greek place by us (Wisconsin) and they said all they add to their lamb at this restaurant is spices, and since we don't eat the tomatoes or sauce anyway, minus the pita it should be ok.

What the **** is a gyro?
                    You mean kebabs?
We get chicken kebabs here and I have a real taste for the tikka version. No bread or veggies, just MEAT! :nod
Tubby or not tubby, fat is the question.

Eh... trying to remember my UK visit.... I do believe you people do call them kebabs over there. Kebab in the US typcially refers to meat grilled on a stick however.

A Gyro is a greek sandwich, served in a pita with lamb meat, tomato, onion, sometimes lettuce, and a tzatziki sauce.

im from chicago home to the greatest gyro meat company, Kronos. gyro meat is half beef and half lamb. it is served with onions, tomatoes, tzatziki sauce, which is a yogart base with cucumber strands, oregano, olive oil, and salt. all on a pita. the meat has no fillers and is just fine. SH#T its better then fine... its a godsend! if you live in chicago, go to HUBS on dempster in skokie. you will thank me!

Are you sure Gyros meat is beef/lamb? Gyros is commonly lamb mixed with minced pork (at least thats how it is in Greece).

And by the way, the best Gyros in Chicago is not at HUBS, go to Greektown Gyros on Jackson & Halsted in Greektown. I've tried them all in Chicago and this one is the best.

My family also loves gyros, but the pre-packaged gyros are too expensive and have questionable carb counts, so I have come up with a carb-friendly recipe for a gyro salad. The other members of my family just use pita bread.

                            G-Mom's Low Carb Gyro Salad

                            Meat:
2 lbs. Beef Shoulder tenderloin strips (I have also seen them as Medallion Strips), sliced thin

                            Other ingredients:
                            Frying oil
                            Minced garlic, about 2 t.
onion (just a bit per serving)
tomato (just a bit per serving)
                            Feta cheese
                            Black olives

                            Sauce:
                            8 oz. Sour Cream
                            grated cucumbers
~salt, pepper, garlic powder~add amounts that taste well to you
heavy whipping cream--add to sauce to thin

Pour about 1/2 inch oil into frying pan. Add strips of meat, garlic, dash of pepper. Slow fry on medium heat...the slower the better, since the meat will be extra tender. If you like the onion sauteed, then sautee it in butter.

For sauce, combine all sauce ingredients.

For a Greek-style salad, arrange a bed of lettuce on a plate, add meat, onions, tomatoes, black olives, feta cheese, and dollop of sauce...enjoy!

If you can find low-carb pita bread, I am sure you could just add these ingredients to that.

Some gyros have ground onion included in with the meat, which will up the carb count considerably. Beware.
