okay guys, i think i've got this atkins thing figured out enough to share some info with you. i have been an applebee's employee for 8 years. after a month of going into the kitchen, reading ingredient lists, and quizzing the chefs, i am ready to let everyone know what to avoid and what to stick with when eating at applebees. just to let everyone know, i did not seek any advice from company officials. this is all stuff i have compiled on my own.

    1. if you get the fajitas, ask your server if you can have plain, unmarinated chicken, beef, or shrimp. the fajita marinade contains high fructose corn syrup as a main ingredient. it is loaded with sugar. this is how i order fajitas(order accordingly to your phase and net carbs): fajitas(-marinade) without rice, with a big plate of lettuce instead. the veggies that come with fajitas are green peppers, onions, and pico de gallo(cilantro, onions, tomatoes, and japelenos). i also add sauteed mushrooms to add some flavor.

    2. applebee's salsa is sugar free!! the only ingredient that is not a veggie is citric acid.

    3. applebee's offers 3 veggie alternatives from the induction list!!
    1.broccoli (4oz plain, steamed)
2.weight watchers broccoli (6oz steamed, topped with red
pepper flakes, veggie oil, and garlic)
3.asparagus (grilled, topped with salt, pepper, and garlic)

    4. applebee's offers tons of salad dressing choices. i have been sticking to oil and vinegar or taking my own. i have not been able to check the nutritional value of all of them, but you can ask your server to bring you your dressing on the side in a disposable ramekin. on the bottom of the plastic ramiken the oz is listed, 2oz for small, 5 1/2 oz for the large. this has really helped me when i have taken my own dressing so that i know exactly how much dressing i am eating.

    5. applebee's has tons of cheese!!! they have feta, american, cheddar, swiss, blue cheese, pepperjack, colby/jack and parmesean.

i hope these tips help everyone. i know the hardest part of this WOE for me, has been figuring out what i can eat. just remember, your server will do everything they can to accommodate your dietary needs. don't be afraid to ask.

Thanks a bunch for this info!

Aren't the boneless wings breaded and fried? If not, I might be in heaven again.

I usually only go there for lunches, and I love the Santa Fe Chicken Salad. I just get no tortilla strips.

Yes Higgies, you're right, they are breaded. Usually boneless wings are it helps the sauce 'stick' to them since they have no skin:

            http://www.applebees.com/Menu_Detail.aspx?ID=111

I couldn't find a carbcount for them from Applebees but did find some others which gives you an idea:

            Chili's 55g's per serving

            KFC 44g's per serving

            Carl's Jr. 51g's per serving

            Rosa's 41 g's per serving

            Tyson 7g's - definately you're best bet!

Since there is no nutritional info listed anywhere, and we know for sure they are breaded, I'd be avoiding them. Seems all of the restaurant brands are really high in carbs.

              Re: applebees

Applebees also injects there steak with sugar! I called and asked the manager if there was any kind of sugar in or on the steak, he read the box and said it was injected with a glucose solution.....

They inject their steak with sugar? Do any other restaraunts do that? I had never even considered that as an option. Also, Miss Ree thanks for the info....it is very much appreciated!

                  Re: applebees

I think a lot of them may. I learned the hard way about eating out, and to ask MANY questions!! At applebees, they had to look on the box that the restraunt get the steaks in to find out. I cannot tell you how may times I have gone out to eat and gotten what I thought to be a legal meal to find I had sabatoged myself unknowingly.

It's almost impossible to know what people are putting in our food when we eat out. Even butter isn't really butter sometimes.

I like the Santa fe salad when I go to Applebee's (minus the chips that come with it of course). I have been told that the mexi-ranch dressing is actually just a salsa and sourcream added together so I feel like it is allowable. Is that what it is actually made of? Looking at the name mexi-ranch it seems like salsa and ranch mixed which would still be allowed? Am I wrong in eating the dressing?

Oh, yeah, I definately want to know about the steaks, Miss Ree. I guess I am just naive enough to believe that when I order plain meat (ie: steak), when it comes out of the kitchen it is PLAIN MEAT! I am really gonna change the way I eat out. Guess I'll start calling the restaraunts in advance and asking those questions. But it is nice to have an insider at Applebee's to help us all along! Thanks Miss

okay so i looked at the box the steaks come in and here's the scoop. the plain sirloins do not have sugar. the marinated steaks (for fajitas, teriyaki bowls, and flavored steaks) have sugar in the marinade. i have been eating the palin steaks like the ribeye and sirloin with no problems.as for the mexiranch- it does not have sour cream. it is ranch and salsa mixed.
