  • could this be a candida overgrowth

    Hi:
When I was in my first year of Atkins, some days I had two low-carb chocolates, some days one, some days none, (carborite or atkins endluge) wich are made with maltitol, and my stomach could tolerate these with no problem, no flatulence, no diarreah. I lost weight with no problem, too. Some tiems I made desserts with maltitol, and I ate them happyly.

Before a year, I had to quit because I was not losing any more, and stopped having maltitol, even splenda, no sweeteners at all, and I countinued losing with no problem.

When I tryed one chocolate again, the results were catastrofic, my stomach could not tolerate polialcohols again, no even the half or a chocolate!!!! Now if I am in the mood for something sweet, I use only splenda for my desserts, I can not use maltitol any more. If I want to eat a chocolate i just have the half one day and the other half the other day, I do that just in the weekends, when my husband and daughters are eating icecream

My question is if this could be a candida overgrowth?? I read that bacteria eats the polialcohols in guts, causing gas. Should I start having garlic and acidophilus?

I am not interested in having maltitol for my desserts anymore, but I would like to eat a chocolate sometimes with no problem.

    Hi!

That doesn't sound like candida overgrowth so much as your body no long tolerates those foods from this WOL. If you feel you may have candida, do the spit test. The first thing in the morning, BEFORE you put anything in your mouth (even water), fill a glass with water and spit. If the saliva forms legs and/or sinks to the bottom of the glass, that indicates candida. If the saliva stays at the top of the water, you're ok.

My opinion is that you just no longer tolerate those foods anymore. Isn't that great!!!!

    And congratulations for making goal!!

Thanks debbie, I would like to tolearte a little bit more, but it is OK. The saliva test has always showed positive, eventhoug I have no candida symptoms any more.
So my body does not like polialcoholes, once I stopped having them, interesting!

Re: could this be a candida overgrowth

I know what you mean. All the symptoms I had were the very same ones associated with menopause. I put the spit test off for many months thinking it was just "the change" LOL

But I took it, and had it. I took very aggressive action and got rid of it in 6 weeks. Then the holidays (sigh). Anyway, working on it again.

I can sympathize with you though. I'm allergic to chocolate so it doesn't matter what form it's in, it makes me sick. I obviously made up for it in other ways, otherwise I wouldn't be HERE!!

        Good luck!

candida elimination for me is not about weight loss, but about health.

If left unchecked it's my belief that candida can get worse.

Re: could this be a candida overgrowth

I'm getting rid of candida both for health and weight loss. Don't want the candida to progress to "leaky gut" or spread throughout my body.

Mirna, are there other food items that you know of that cause you troubles, or is it just the chocolate? Everyone is different when it comes to candida. You can always try the garlic and the probiotics...it certainly wouldn't hurt.

Keep us informed of your progress!

Re: could this be a candida overgrowth

Thanks for all of your answers.

LC Dave, I am already taking garlic and probiotic just in case. Tomorrow I will do the spit test to see if it is still positive.

Biogeek, the only thing that causes me troubles are polialcohols, about 8gr. are enough for making my guts crazy. I have had sugar, and not even it causes me trouble. If I have TOO MUCH cream, or cream cheese, i get colon inflamation, for me that would be an entire package of cream cheese in a day.

6 weeks debbie! That is pretty fast!

Do you recommend yogurt sugar free, as a source of acidophilus?
