Happy Atkining!! I've just been prescribed citalopram (ratio-citalopram 20mg)....I was wondering if anyone else has taken this? If so, or if not...does anyone know how this can affect my induction or atkins or dieting in general?? Thanks so much!

    Re: Citalopram

your drug is a SSRIs and those drugs are processed in the liver. depending on your genetic make up you may or may not have the liver proteins that will effect your weight loss with this drug. There are 43 different liver proteins that can effect the medication class you are taking. Some of the pathways SSRIs use are shared with low carb diets some aren't.
your med has a less then 5% of the folk taking it reported any weight issues so you should do fine. If you notice you are having carbohydrate cravings when taking this med discuss it with your doc.

But even if it slows your weight loss some it will be better then if you were depressed and using food as a comfort. FIx the depression and the rest of your life will improve too. We have many folk taking SSRI's and other antidepressants that are losing.

      Re: Citalopram

If you look a little farther down this forum you'll see my post about Citalopram.
I'm actually losing on it. Granted my weight loss is slow now, but I'm creeping down bit by bit.
The only thing I found was that it gave me nausea (which you'll read about in my thread) and occasionally now I'll get nausea as well but it's pretty mild. It helps my sleeping and I'm grateful for that as I had lots of trouble sleeping through the night before.

I am very happy for the people that are losing weight with prozac, celexa, zoloft..etc because the usual side effect is weight gain, with women being more the target. Maybe something to do with low carb gives it a reverse effect? Might be worth researching....
