Hi Amrsalem,
I was addicted to Xanax for eleven years. As a short term therapy it's fine for relief of anxiety related conditions.
But it's important to know especially if you will or are taking Xanax for a prolonged period of time that Xanax has many potential dangers - the least of which is slowing down your ability to lose weight or in some cases making weight loss incredibly difficult on any diet.
About Xanax:
- * The single most addictive Benzodiazepine there is, withdrawal from Xanax is excruciating and long - an average detox is 12 weeks as opposed to 48-72 hours for even opiates like heroin and morphine
* Xanax has a very long half life - it's acts quickly but the benefit is short lives as opposed to a medication like Clonopin where it takes longer to act but the benefit and relief last dramatically longer.
* Xanax stores itself in your fat cells - and it stays there for decades even long after you've stopped taking it. This causes everything from lethargy to sexual dysfunction to weight gain.
*Rebound studies have proven that the rate of rebound among patients on Xanax is higher than any other Benzo (rebound is when a drug actually increases the symptoms it's meant to relive)
That's why folks taking Xanax on a regular basis crave and in fact eventually demand and need higher doses.
* Xanax is the one of the most over prescribed medications in the world
I could go on all night, but I'll wrap this up by saying if your therapy with Xanax is within the reccomended time frame of six weeks, weightloss may or may not be an issue for you.
If however your taking it for an indifinit period of time I would strongly suggest a talk with your Dr.
Clonopin is another Benzo which works as well as Xanax and although all Benzos are addictive, Clonopin has none of the horrific side effects associated with long term Xanax use - nor does it impair weightloss, you might want to look into it.

Hi Amersalem, :wave
If you ever say "I hate myself" again I'll hunt you down and make you eat carbs!
You're here because deep down you love yourself and you have every right too. Xanax in a short term therapy is fine. I've had insomnia most of adult life...it comes and goes.
Because Xanax really isn't a sleep aid why don't you aks your Dr about Ambian - it works very well and unlike Xanax will help you ease back into a normal sleep cycle rather then just "knocking you out"
Also, Dr. Atkins always reccomended MELATONIN which is a supplement you can buy most any where, it's very inexpensive compared to perscription drugs, it's safe and for most people, myself included it works like a charm. The reccomended dose is 3 mg before bed.
