There were numerous studies done to show St. John's Wort is just as effective as Prozac. If I can find the evidence I will certainly post. The quality is a problem, since supplements aren't regulated. I bought an expensive extract of St. John's Wort for depression, and noticed the difference after two weeks of taking it. It did work for me. I've taken Effexor, and Wellbutrin XR, St. John's Wort in a combination with other herbs and vitamins worked best for me. YMMV. ALWAYS TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR!

My son is in med school. He at one time tried St. John's Wort, and it had no effect at all. In med school, he learned that a peron's genetic haplotype (genetic DNA class or something like that) will determine if SJW works or not. His was wrong. This is sort of like the bad taste from saccharin. Some people have a really bad after-taste, and others don't, and it has been shown this is also genetic.

He also encountered a solid scientific study, not the first, which shows that an hour of vigorous exercise a day is 5 times more effective in treating depression than meds.

Let me define that. Those taking anti-depression meds, 38% have more problems. With that hour daily of vigorous exercise, only 7% have more problems with depression.
