  • Does anyone take Wellbutrin for Anxiety (not depression)?

I've had anxiety lately due to stress and just started taking Wellbutrin. How's it working for you?

hi Cleo, your looking so great! i had to tell you that.Your very beautiful!! I want your smile heee!

I dont know if this helps but i have suffered from terrible anxiety for 2 One and half years, and i went on prozac for it, and i must say it done absoulte wonders for me.at first i was scared to go on meds, but i know it perfectly natural, and i did some reserch and prozac renound for being great for calming anexiety and making you feel more positive about your anexiety worries. However i was going through depression at the time so that partly why it helped too, i understand you are not...but nevertheless it been so great for me, and alot of peolpe i have spoke to with anxiety have told me the same.

Hope your meds will help; sure they will, but dont expect it to work straight away, it can take up to a month before any effects sometimes.

{{{gilly}}} Thank you so much! I appreciate your experience and your compliment! I hope it kicks in soonish. I really dislike feeling freaked out. Kicking caffeine helped somewhat I'm sure.

{{{{{{{{Cleo}}}}}}}}}} good luck kiddo. Lemme know how it works out for you. I used Zoloft years and years ago, it was the only one I could tolerate but it seems like anxiety is revisiting me too again dammit. Little things like driving is starting to mess with me.

Cleo, I am on Wellbutrin for anxiety. I love it :nod I only take 1 a day right now. It doesn't have the effects of an anti-depressant - meaning, it doesn't take your emotions away. It does calm you and things don't get to you as much.

Good luck with it. If you have anymore questions, please feel free to ask!! ha

Thank you debbie! I'm glad to know it's peachy stuff. I get pretty stressed about some things and the next thing I know my ears start ringing. I used to handle stress so much better than I do now.

{{{going}}} I hear you. I get stressed about little things that are ridiculous and then it wends its way into other more important facets of my life!

Thank you all so much for feedback. Wellbutrin makes me pretty ookie feeling, but maybe that's a good thing? *lol*

            Does it make you tired?

                Hi Cleo, :wave

I'm sorry to hear your experiencing what sounds like generalized anxiety.

But I have to tell you I'm surprised to hear you were put on Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin belongs to a family of anti depressive medications called Tricyclics which were the predecessors to SSRI medications like Prozac, Zoloft and a gazzillion others.

The reason for concern is Wellbutrin is never prescribed for anxiety - not by a Psychiatrist worth his salt anyway. It causes agitation and in many cases a stimulant effect wich can crank up the volume on feelings of anxiety.

My guess is your prescribing physician isn't a Psychiatrist - and that's a problem because these issues are out of their range of expertise -hence the epidemic of over prescribed drugs by Doctors who aren't qualified to either assess a proper diagnosis or prescribe medication that's going to help you.

If by the odd chance it was a Psychiatrist who prescribed the Wellbutrin for you - call him and ask him his reasoning for prescribing you a slow acting (4-6 weeks to kick in) Tricyclic anti depressant with known side effects of agitation, irritability and anxiety - as opposed to fast acting medications made specifically to treat anxiety, I would sure be interested to hear his reasoning.

My suggestion to you is to see another a Doctor - ASAP and look at medications that will provide you with immediate relife like Clonopin or Atavan - even Xanax for a short term therapy of 8-8 weeks is a much better choice than Wellbutrin which will give you no relife whatsoever until it builds to a certain level in your body - which again takes weeks, and even then you may find your symptoms worse, not better.

Sorry to alarm you kiddo, and there's really no reason to be. But I wouldn't put off making an appointment with a Psychiatrist and getting yourself the relief you need.

                Peter :hug

                  You know...

Now that you mention it, ever since I started taking Wellbutrin I feel really edgy and irritable! I am sick half the time and hungry the other half of the time, and when I'm neither I'm tired and want a nap.

                  That's so not me!

I think I'm going to ditch the meds and learn some deep breathing techniques. Or kick boxing. Something relaxing and yet pummelling-like.

                  :joy

Hey cleo, heard about what peter said and your reply.I think maybe talk to your Doctor about it for some reasurance. But wanted to tell you that when my anexiety was at its worst i started acupunture twice a week for 6 weeks, it quite expensive over here but only the price of a new item of clothing so i used to think of it like that. It was fantastic for me, i was so afriad of needles i vomoted before i went but a friend of mine at uni is of chinese origin and she told me to llok on the net for reserch to reasure me this is the best form of treatment for anexiety.I think it the best thing i have ever done.It a bit rude :censor to describe the feeling and the sensation you get when the needles are put over your face head and feet, but it like Sex (but i mean the orgasmic part heee!) honestly it was the most pleasurable experience i ever had with a women heee! :icondance
but serously it calms all of your mind, and it really works but only if you have it done at least 6 times, so that it can stimulate the heat away from your liver and kidneys.Dont ask me the science behind it but this is what causes the panic apparently. Also look at the tip of your tonge is the tip darker or more red than the rest of your tongue, if so this is a clear sign of strong axiety.Mine was like that, but after 6 weeks of accupunture i felt so good, my tongue went back to normal colour. Also normally there have some very nice herbal drinks or herbal suppliments to take alongside the accupuntion and they work very well too.I was a very bad anxious person.I got worried and panicky bout everything, then making the problem like a snoball, making it bigger and bigger in my head. After accupunture, i began to control these worries as nothing seemed to be as bad as it seemed after this.Hope this little bit of advice helps.Sorry i forgot to tell you in my first reply.Gill xxx

Re: Does anyone take Wellbutrin for Anxiety (not depression)?

Peter is right. Wellbutrin is a stimulant. I have heard individuals who were dumb enough to take three or four times the dosage getting an amphetamine like buzz. Although I hated Effexor, it did help my anxiety. However, the weight gain and mood swings certainly weren't worth it. Not to mention the high blood pressure when I weaned off it. Typically the benzo's are prescribed for anxiety. Clonazepam (Klonopin), Lorazepam (Ativan), Alprazolam (Xanax), and Diazepam (Valium). However they have their drawbacks too. Here's what works for me:

                      GABA
                      Valerian Root
                      Kava Kava
                      Calcium
                      Melatonin

I have a prescription for Klonopin that I rarely take. But sometimes it is helpful.

Re: Does anyone take Wellbutrin for Anxiety (not depression)?

                        peter is right.
I was on 300mg of wellbutrin for a few months alone prescribed by my gyno for anxiety. That was the exact OPPOSITE of what i needed to be. I was a mad woman on it. I just went to see a pshychiatrist who was SHOCKED that i was on wellbutrin in the first place, and the dosage was not proper either. He put me on 20mg of lexapro and is trying to wean me from the wellbutrin, so i'm currently on 150mg with my lexapro and i notice a HUGE improvement. Nite and day, actually. I highly recommend going to see a phschiatrist who has great referrals. they know what they are doing with the mind.
