I just stared induction about a week ago but really staring doing the 20 carb rule about two days ago. My hunger has gonne away, however, i'm becoming more and more depress. This is probably the reason I was lowering my carbs little by little rather than just cutting them out all at once. should i up my carb intake or does this go away eventually? I don't want to quit specially now that I am not hungry but if I continue being this miserable then whats the point? has anyone expirience this while dieting ? maybe is just me ! maybe it will go away/anyone?

Re: depression while dieting, anyone?
It is not something members here have brought up very often. I cannot remember a post about it right now. Is depression something you suffer from? Do you take meds?

Re: depression while dieting, anyone?
as she said are you on any meds?
if you are defieicnet in some vits and/or minerals you can get depression like symptoms. how are you getting your vitamin D? are you taking a good multi VP?
any chance you have low thyroid? that can make one feel depressed.
Are you coming off caffeine? that could be effecting your brain.
and are you eating enough food while doing your Atkins. some folk do low cal low carb and that can mess up your mood too.
Carbs do not actually produce any brain chemicals that effect depression. it is reactions of amino acids that create them.by the book atkinseer

Re: depression while dieting, anyone?
Actually, yes I do have a very mild underactive thyroid but the doctor said that she wouldn't treat it yet because it's not low enough or something like that and I'm glad you brought it up because I was thinking that may be the cause. Also, I haven't been taking vitamins and I do have a long history of dieting, which might have cause some defficiencies. and finally, I exercise today for about an hour, so maybe my caloric intake was too low. So you just basically help me solve the mystery!!
OH I do have eating disorders, I recently put on about 15 lbs in a few weeks after an unfortunate event. I still haven't learn to deal with my emotions. well I guess I am just venting. Just hope the headache and depression goes away soon!! thanks guys!!

Re: depression while dieting, anyone?
I can't believe your doc said that about your hypothyroid. if you are hypo you are hypo and need treatment period. your doc should treat your symptoms not your numbers!
once your thyroid is in range for you then you will feel so much better.
did you know hupothyroid was so often misdiagnoised in the past as depression thyroid testing is the first part of figuring out how to treat a presenting depressed person.
Have a converstation with your doc after you read up on hypothyroid on the stop the madness site if your issues continue.by the book atkinseer

Re: depression while dieting, anyone?
Yes, I was diagnose with depreesion a while ago. I didn't want to take meds so, I desided on treating it with good eating habits and exersice with no success. it has defenetly affect it my personal life, relationships, work and overall outlook on life. It is unbelieveable to me because I did tell my doctor about the depression and I knew the fact that she refuse to treat my thyroid was weird. I had done research but again everytime I brought it up she kind of brush it off. She is no longer my doctor !! thanks for 2bigformysize! for pointing this out. It's been years of trying to figure out what is wrong with me. Once the doc diagnose me with low thyroid I knew it had to be it. I think It might have had something to do with my insurance. Gonna start start looking for a new practioner as soon as possible. Again, thanks for your help!!

Re: depression while dieting, anyone?
Only thing about taking medication for hypothyrodism, is when you start...you can never stop. Which is why a lot of doctors want to wait until the last minute to prescribe them. I've been told that my thyroid test came back "borderline." So until it gets worse, I will not be prescribed medication. I've been told to try seeking out naturopathic remedies, but unfortunately, insurance doesn't cover that type of care and I just can't afford to cough up the cash to see that type of doctor, nor do I want to attempt those remedies without supervision. Hopefully, you'll find a new doctor that can diagnose and treat you appropriately.
I've also suffered from depression, but meds actually made things WORSE...and the withdrawal (even after a safe taper) from the meds made it seem like my symptoms were worse before they got better. Depression can come from a variety of things, including hypothyroidism. I hope you find your answers soon.
