hey im new to this site and I have been reading a lot of positive comments about low carb diets. I was on atkins before and found myself getting very tired, constipated, my breath smelled and I had ketones. I am a type 1 diabetic and really want to try it again but I am worried about ketoacidosis as this can be fatal.

Hi and welcome! You may want to read this: http://atkins.com/Archive/2001/12/18-590441.html
I also found this:
I do not see why Atkins would harm you at all. It is my understanding that when a type 1 diabetic goes into ketoacidosis it is due to high blood sugar with no insulin to bring it into normal range. This high blood sugar would never occur on Atkins. The ketones in your blood from ketosis are not being produced in the same way as those in ketoacidosis. And they are not building up.
You need to discuss what you are doing with your doctor, if you haven't already. Hopefully, other more knowledgeable folks can help you more.
