  • Question for diabetic MIL

My MIL is diabetic and has kidney failure. She's not on bypass as yet, and they told her not to eat too much protein because of her kidneys, hence, no Atkins. I was reading in Dr. Bernstein's book about a guy who WAS on bypass 3 times a week that did the low carb diet, and he was okay. Is it a highly individual thing, or are her docs just being cautious? She says she doesn't like meat that much anyway, and probably wouldn't want to do Atkins, but it would help her so much, I think! She can hardly walk or see, can't take a shower because she can't stand up long enough, etc etc. I want to help her, but she's rather a "hardhead".

Any specific articles or things to point out to her/her docs? Questions to ask them?

    THANKS!

Dr Atkins warned us that if our Creatinine was over 2.0 not to do this program unles under the supervision of your doc. She could low glycemic index her carbs but she is very limited in the amount of protein she can have period not just meats.

Does that mean the patient in the Dr. B. book had a creatinine level of under 2 then? How could that be if he was on dialysis 3 times a week? Or is it because he was on dialysis that he could do the program because it was being filtered out for him?

And I meant dialysis, not bypass. LOL

His doctor monitored him and made sure he was doing well. Dr B's program is higher carb then Atkins too so the ratios would be different. If your MIL's doc monitors her and feels she can safely do Atkins then she could also do it, but Dr Atkins didn't want to make anybody with obvious kidney damage worse with the high protein level of his program. it isn't the fats that he was concerned about.
