  • Gout & Diabetes?

Anyone here been diagnosed with Gout & Diabetes? A man in our office found out last week that he has both (eek!) and is trying to adjust to them. I printed out some information on diabetes from the board/forum and wanted to know if anyone else has experience with both?

Any and all information/tips would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Re: Gout & Diabetes?

I suffer from gout though i'm not diabetic. I am a reactive hypoglycemic which is one of the first stages of becoming a type 2 diabetic.

AFAIK, gout and diabetes don't have much to do with one another. Gout is the result of a genetic defect where your body can't effectively expell uric acid. Over the years, the uric acid tends to build up and form crystals at joints, usually at extremeties where the temperature is lower.

While the Atkins WoE is very helpful for people with diabetes, it will however exacerbate gout. Dr. Atkins recommends 300mg of Allopurinol a day. Also, drinking water is a must if you have gout. Drinking tea is recommended.

      Re: Gout & Diabetes?

Thank you, Matawguro, for the info. I had already printed out that forum thread for him, but thought maybe I could find more.

Like you mentioned, eating for gout and diabetes are two different things. I wasn't sure if there would be any helpful advice I could give him. He had asked me for info on diabetes (since my Dad had it for years before he passed away) and I knew that animal protein was a no-no for people with gout (my Mom had gout).

Anyway, I was just trying to find out if anyone else had both and how they were eating to help treat the symptoms.

Again, thanks for your input. I appreciate it.
